Theological density and mediated legibility: mystical theology in Rosalía's LUX

| dc.description.abstract | This article examines how theologically dense cultural production becomes legible across criticism, digital platforms, and editorial distribution. It treats Rosalía's LUX (2025) as a theory-building case: an unusually concentrated work whose eighteen tracks, fourteen languages, and extensive authorial declarations bring multiple traditions of women's mysticism into contemporary popular music. The article defines theological density through the concentration, specificity, and structural centrality of theological references, and mediated legibility as the capacity of an object to be recognized through the interpretive, classificatory, and distributional categories available within a given media environment. It combines a close hermeneutic reading of the album with a structured qualitative analysis of fifty-one English-, Spanish-, and Portuguese-language reception items, descriptive circulation metrics collected at a fixed observation point, and an analysis of the album's phased physical and digital release. The findings identify eight operators of theological reception, grouped as semantic translation, enunciative reassignment, institutional smoothing, and partial recognition. These operators do not simply erase religious meaning; they selectively render it legible as spirituality, wellness, empowerment, identity, irony, or formal experimentation. The circulation data are used as exploratory contrasts rather than evidence of algorithmic causation, while the release sequence is interpreted as a form of phased distribution compatible with artistic, commercial, and platform-related considerations. LUX therefore illuminates how theological material persists under contemporary mediation through selective recognition, translation, and reinscription. | eng |
