Angola was one of the five former Portuguese colonies in Africa since the 15th century. Shortly after its independence in 1975, on the backdrop of the cold war, the country fell into a long civil war that caused immense human suffering and destruction of its productive and social infrastructure. Achieving peace became a precious asset that kept being delayed due to ideological and political antagonism. We pretend to analyze the circumstances and context of peace processes in Angola since 1991 to 2002 and the main challenges for building and preserving social peace. The paper aims at contributing to a reflection on the necessity to transform the concept of peacebuilding underlying Angola’s past peace processes into a paradigm of peacebuilding outside the logic of war, and on how to transform a military peace into a social peace. This paradigm should be held from 2002 when the civil war ended in Angola.pt_PT
