This paper studies the repricing of publicly traded Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) firms in 2022. Recent practitioner research has framed the repricing in generative-AI terms, either as a tailwind that deepens recurring-revenue moats or as a substitution risk under which AI agents commoditize per-seat pricing. I examine these explanations against a more standard asset-pricing mechanism in which firms with long-duration cash flows respond more strongly to changes in discount rates. The analysis uses quarterly data for 90 U.S. SaaS firms from 2014Q1 through 2024Q4. Three results emerge. First, the structural break in valuations occurs in 2022Q1, at the start of the Federal Reserve tightening cycle and before the release of ChatGPT in November 2022. Second, the cross-sectional valuation function shifts toward operating margins, although thiseffect appears mainly among firms whose margins were already informative before 2022. Third, the decline in valuations is larger for firms with longer cash-flow duration. The cross-sectional patterns are difficult to reconcile with the main AI-based explanations. Repricing differences are more closely related to pre-existing growth and profitability characteristics than to measures of AI exposure. Overall, the evidence is more consistent with the duration-based mechanism commonly documented in the broader asset-pricing literature.eng
