dc.description.abstractIntroduction: Studying the food microbiota is essential for assessing the overall structure and diversity of bacterial communities over shelf life and for identifying specific spoilage microorganisms. Understanding the microbiota of mealworms, a sustainable protein source, is crucial for guaranteeing their safe consumption. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of different feeding regimes (4-week larvae) on the microbiota of whole Tenebrio molitor larvae as well as the impact of four different starvation times (6-week larvae) on the bacterial community composition. Methods: Bacterial community structure and diversity were assessed through sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene amplicons. DNA extraction from fresh larvae was carried out using the Quiagen DNeasy mericon Food Kit. 16S rRNA gene sequence data was processed with QIIME2 by Novogene UK. Conclusion: Overall, both feeding regime and starvation duration affected the microbial composition of whole larvae, highlighting the complex dynamics of the microbial ecology of mealworm. Such variability is relevant for food safety, as microbial composition influences hygiene quality, potential pathogen presence, and the stability of edible insect products.eng
