Existe uma ideia generalizada de que os jovens estão cada vez menos ligados à religião. Os motivos prendem-se com a crescente secularização da sociedade, a perda de identidade religiosa e da credibilidade e influência das instituições religiosas, o aumento das tendências materialistas e do imanentismo. Com recurso a entrevistas a jovens e a agentes de pastoral, confirma-se a perceção que a ligação dos jovens à Igreja tem vindo a declinar, sendo, contudo, naturalmente, distintos os motivos apresentados pelos jovens e pelos agentes de pastoral. Apesar desta ligação ser agora marcada pela indiferença, não se encontra desprezo ou qualquer beligerância perante o fenómeno religioso. Permanece, sem qualquer dúvida, uma forte influência histórica e cultural da religião católica no discurso dos jovens.
There is a widespread idea that young people are less and less connected to religion. The reasons are related to the growing secularization of society, the loss of religious identity and the credibility and influence of religious institutions, the increase in materialist tendencies and immanentism. The use of interviews with young people and pastoral workers confirms the perception that the connection of young people to the Church has been declining, although, of course, the motives presented by young people and pastoral workers are different. Although this connection is now marked by indifference, there is no contempt or any belligerence towards the religious phenomenon. There remains, without any doubt, a strong historical and cultural influence of the Catholic religion in the discourse of young people.
