O autor analisa a teoria ética das virtudes no âmbito dos cuidados de saúde, a partir do pensamento de Edmund D. Pellegrino e David C. Thomasma, os principais apologistas de uma ética das virtudes na prática clínica. Esta reflexão encontra-se estruturada com base na relação médico-paciente, podendo ser aplicada por analogia a outras profissões. Descrevem-se de forma sumária as principais características dos modelos comercial e contratual na relação clínica, destacando-se a proposta de Pellegrino e Thomasma de um modelo de beneficência fiduciária. O exercício da medicina assente no paradigma das virtudes e neste modelo de beneficência é fundamental para uma prática médica mais humanizada e que tenha em conta o melhor interesse dos pacientes. Contribuirá também para contrabalançar a hegemonia e aridez do principialismo e as limitações dos modelos comercial e contratual de relação médico-paciente.
The author analyzes the theory of virtue ethics in the field of healthcare from the perspective of Edmund D. Pellegrino and David C. Thomasma, the main apologists of virtue ethics in medical practice. This reflection is based on the doctor-patient relationship but could be applied by analogy to other professions. We describe the main characteristics of the commercial and contractual models in the clinical relationship, highlighting the proposal of Pellegrino and Thomasma of the beneficence-in-trust model. The practice of medicine based on the paradigm of virtues and in this model of beneficence is essential to promote a more humane medicine and takes into account the best interest of patients. It will also contribute to counterbalance the hegemony and dullness of principlism and the limitations of the commercial and contractual models of doctor-patient relationship.
