Abstract(s)
This article presents essential concepts in Deaf Studies lacking dissemination in Portugal. It describes the discourses of western Deaf communities’ members, as linguistic and cultural minorities, explaining the contents of that conception of the Deaf individual. Moreover, we approach issues concerning Deaf Identity, such as categories and processes, based on relevant literature. We conclude by stressing the importance of paying attention to the internal discourses of Deaf Communities, and debate the issue of the Deaf trait as a medical or ethnic reality.
