| dc.description.abstract | In this paper, we propose a testimonial interpretation of George Orwell’s novel 1984, an interpretation that not only integrates and goes beyond a strictly sacrificial interpretation typical of all totalitarian logic, but also brings to light the dream-like thinking expressed in the various dreams of Winston Smith, the work’s tragic hero. Following the symbolic interpretation of Winston Smith’s dreams, we will put forward the following two theses: 1) beyond the compensatory function attributed to them, Winston Smith’s dreams appear as restorative elements of his psyche and, consequently, of his resistance to torture and to the destruction of his personal identity operated by O’Brien and the Party; 2) if there is a specificity of the human condition, it lies in dream consciousness, that is, the attribution of meaning to the narrative produced from the dream, essential to the individuation process of consciousness. | eng |
