Para Louis Lavelle, do ponto de vista do absoluto do seu ato, o tempo é um derivado da diferenciação ontológica que é o cerne quer do que constitui o âmbito do ser quer do que constitui o âmbito da inteligência humana como isso que, ao exercer-se, cria o ser como ato de sentido. Do ato, como absoluto da diferenciação que cria o real, todo o real, o tempo mede a diferença. Esta diferença é, também ela, um absoluto que nada destrói. Este absoluto marca o que há de novo em cada ente, dado na e pela sua diferença, a nada redutível. O sentido mítico do tempo como esse que devora os filhos mais não faz do que assinalar a irreversibilidade de cada novo ato, que, ao criar cada nova disposição ontológica do mundo, é irrepetível, irrecuperável: o mundo é sempre uma infinita novidade perante a inteligência humana ou é nada.
