“City Art – Mimo and the City” is a machinima project that utilizes the Grand Theft Auto V engine to explore the condition of the artist in contemporary society. It adopts an a/r/tographical approach that integrates artistic practice, theoretical research, and social critique. The symbolic narrative of Mimo, a marginalized character who transitions between the creative purity of an island and the hostility of a hypercapitalist city, critiques the incommunicability of authentic art within consumerist urban ecosystems. Inspired by a theoretical framework that articulates the works of Debord (Society of the Spectacle), Bauman (Liquid Modernity), Baudrillard (Hyperreality), Jameson (Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism), and Fisher (Capitalist Realism), the project transforms the game”s technical limitations (such as NPC behaviors and unrealistic physics) into visual metaphors for alienation and resistance through a “poetics of the glitch”. The methodology involved narrative conceptualization, a detailed technical workflow, and reflexive analysis via a Digital Logbook. The machinima subverts the violent satire of GTA V, proposing a ludic activism that humanizes the digital. Contributing to the fields of Digital Art Cultures and Media Art History, the project highlights the potential of machinima as a tool for social criticism, challenging the marginalization of the artist and fostering reflections on authenticity and vulnerability in contemporary algorithmic culture.
