Performing arts and rurality: the search for the spirit of the territory

| dc.description.abstract | This article is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in a Portuguese community located in northern Portugal that shares its daily life with a theatre company. This research is theoretically grounded in the intersection between cultural heritage and memory studies that are used as pillars to capture the spirit of this territory. By gathering in their leisure time around theatre and other artistic experiences, this group of people activates a sense of belonging to the community through the sharing of practices and knowledge. The episodes described in this article were captured over two years through a series of interviews and participatory activities. The activities performed were videotaped and, as a whole, take part in a larger project aimed at building a virtual museum. More than an archive or repository composed of material objects of this theatre company, this museum experience is built from a collection of memories of this diverse inter-municipal community that coexists daily with artistic experiences that aggregate and challenge the sensibility of the population. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | Este artigo baseia-se no trabalho de campo etnográfico realizado numa comunidade portuguesa localizada no norte de Portugal que partilha a sua vida quotidiana com uma companhia de teatro. Esta investigação baseia-se teoricamente na intersecção entre o património cultural e os estudos de memória que são utilizados como pilares para captar o espírito deste território. Ao reunir nos seus tempos livres em torno do teatro e outras experiências artísticas, este grupo de pessoas activa um sentimento de pertença à comunidade através da partilha de práticas e conhecimentos. Os episódios descritos neste artigo foram captados durante dois anos através de uma série de entrevistas e actividades participativas. As actividades realizadas foram gravadas em vídeo e, como um todo, tomam parte num projecto mais vasto que visa a construção de um museu virtual. Mais do que um arquivo ou repositório composto por objectos materiais desta companhia de teatro, esta experiência museológica é construída a partir de uma colecção de memórias desta comunidade intermunicipal diversa que coexiste diariamente com experiências artísticas que agregam e desafiam a sensibilidade da população. | pt_PT |
