A complexidade do mercado de trabalho tem vindo a evoluir, pela criação de novas exigências
para os profissionais bem como para as organizações, pelo desenvolvimento de novas
habilidades, adoção de novos comportamentos e execução de tarefas. Neste âmbito, a
Inteligência Emocional (IE) surge como um tema emergente em diferentes campos de
investigação (Wong & Law, 2002) e de particular importância em contexto corporativo.
Intuitivamente espera-se que mais IE resulte em trabalhadores mais adaptados às
complexidades do mercado de trabalho. Contudo, evidências recentes sugerem o contrário. A
presente investigação pretende contribuir para explorar o tema da IE e qual a relação com a
liderança, especificamente se a performance de um líder pode ser prejudicada por níveis altos
de IE. Utilizámos uma abordagem quantitativa através de um questionário que contou com a
participação de 72 líderes ou gestores organizacionais. Foram utilizados instrumentos para
medir diferentes dimensões de IE assim como alguns constructos de liderança como a
Autoeficácia e Autoestima, a Propensão ao Risco, a Segurança Psicológica, a capacidade de
providenciar Feedback Desfavorável e a Manipulação Emocional. Os resultados realçam o
impacto da IE negativamente em relação a temas como o Feedback Desfavorável ou a
Segurança Psicológica. Ao contrário do esperado, a IE não está relacionada com a Propensão
ao Risco e sugere que a Manipulação Emocional poderá ser regulada pela IE.
The complexity and constant mutation of the labour market, has brought up the need for new requirements for professionals and organizations, such as new skills and the adoption of new behaviors and new ways of executing tasks. Within this framework, Emotional Intelligence has been an emergent subject in different research fields (Wong & Law, 2002) with a specific importance for the organizational context. Intuitively, more Emotional Intelligence is expected to result in employees who are more adapted to the complexities of the labour market. However, recent evidence suggests the opposite. A quantitative approach was used through a survey with a participation of 72 organizational leaders or managers. Several instruments were used to measure Emotional Intelligence and leadership constructs as Self-Efficacy, SelfEsteem, Risk Propensity, Psychological Safety, the ability of providing Unfavorable Feedback and Emotional Manipulation. The investigation aims to explore Emotional Intelligence and its relationship with leadership, its implications and how the Emotional Intelligence’ dimensions can influence the performance of a leader. The results highlight the negative impact of specific dimension of Emotional Intelligence in Unfavorable Feedback and Psychological Safety. Beyond expected, any Emotional Intelligence dimensions are related to Risk Propensity and Emotional Manipulation might be regulated by some Emotional Intelligence aspects.
