O Processo de Enfermagem surgiu para colmatar a necessidade de uma metodologia científica e de um pensamento independente do ascendente médico. Teve a sua origem nos EUA e Canadá, na década de 1950-1960 e conduziu à criação de uma terminologia e documentação próprias da enfermagem, acompanhando diversas etapas. Objetivos: Identificar e analisar os aspetos que contribuíram para a implementação do PE, em Portugal, entre 1958 e 1998. Metodologia: Com base no método histórico, procedeuse à identificação, consulta e análise interpretativa dos documentos relacionados com a implementação do PE, em Portugal, entre 1958 e 1998, incluindo formações, eventos científicos, legislação e artigos de revistas. Resultados: Até ao final da década de 1960, não havia referência explícita ao conceito de “Processo de Enfermagem”, em Portugal. A reestruturação da enfermagem portuguesa em 1967 e a crescente complexidade dos cuidados motivaram a procura por metodologias para organizar a sua prática. A partir de 1973, o Processo de Enfermagem ganhou destaque, e foi impulsionado por figuras como Wanda Horta e instituições como a Escola de Ensino e Administração em Enfermagem. A sua integração foi formalizada nos regulamentos profissionais e acompanhou avanços tecnológicos, apesar dos desafios na sua aplicação e da necessidade de uma linguagem comum. Conclusão: A implementação do PE em Portugal ocorreu de forma gradual, com a influência de modelos internacionais e apoio das instituições académicas e hospitalares. A sua aplicação prática consolidou-se como uma metodologia essencial para a qualidade dos cuidados e o progresso da enfermagem.
The Nursing Process emerged to address the need for a scientific methodology and independent thinking from medical precedent. It originated in the United States and Canada in the 1950s and 1960s, leading to the development of nursing-specific terminology and documentation, which encompassed several stages. Objectives: To identify and analyze the aspects that contributed to the implementation of the Nursing Process in Portugal between 1958 and 1998. Methodology: Based on the historical method, documents related to the implementation of the Nursing Process in Portugal between 1958 and 1998 were identified, consulted, and interpreted, including training sessions, scientific events, legislation, and journal articles. Results: Until the late 1960s, there was no explicit reference to the concept of the "Nursing Process" in Portugal. The restructuring of portuguese nursing in 1967 and the increasing complexity of care led to a search for methodologies to organize nursing practice. Beginning in 1973, the Nursing Process gained prominence, driven by figures such as Wanda Horta and institutions such as the School of Nursing Education and Administration. Its integration was formalized in professional regulations and kept pace with technological advances, despite challenges in its application and the need for a common language. Conclusion: The implementation of the Nursing Process in Portugal occurred gradually, influenced by international models and supported by academic and hospital institutions. Its practical application has established itself as an essential methodology for improving the quality of care and advancing nursing.
