Abstract(s)
The main objective of this study is to analyze the manual Tropical Nursing: A Handbook for Nurses and Others Going Abroad, published in 1944, by Arthur Leslie Gregg, with special attention to the specificity of nurses' action in countries considered tropical. This manual presents some considerations about the actions due to nurses, in general, but it also presents a theoretical approach about the correct hygiene measures to be applied in spaces with a tropical climate and about tropical diseases and also a chapter directed to eye care. It is interesting to verify, in the manual under analysis, the medical determination about what nursing knowledge should be, and the firm deliberation about the duties of a nurse. If, on the one hand, it was up to nurses to scientifically know concepts and techniques, on the other hand, it was also their responsibility to have a certain vocational and integral dedication, a mirror of what obedience also should be.
