The religious element of Horace’s work has been studied mainly from a perspective of literary scholarship. In this paper a different approach is taken, using the specific methodologies of religious studies and history of religions, which point to the potentially equivocal concept of ‘religion’ and allow for an exploration of its many dimensions. Here we survey the ritual dimension of Horace’s lyrical work and interpret its numerous ritual references according to their sociological, historical and literary context. The conclusion is that the large majority of these rituals do not have a political or ‘Augustan’ motivation, but reflect a personal or civic ortopraxis.eng
