Singular, na sua ligação à estética simbolista, o teatro poético de Maurice Maeterlinck desenvolve uma relação entre palavra e representação posta ao serviço da revelação de um 'trágico interior" assente nas categorias do silêncio, da ausência e do invisível que muito contribui par uma nova orientação do drama no final do século XIX. Em estreita sintonia com a crise da mimese e da ilusão realista, o teatro de Maeterlinck tece um diálogo privilegiado com o projecto do Livro de Mallarmé e com as equações entre 'drama', 'mistério' e 'música' presentes desde os seus primeiros tentames teatrais. Nessa linha de continuidade, o teatro simbolista de Maurice Maeterlinck ou, noutros termos, a dessacralização da sintaxe transparente e da racionalidade afigura-se fundamental para a compreensão da complexidade ontológica do homem moderno, como a querer demonstrar o que Mallarmé preconizara: a vida sempre nova da Literatura, como superação do nada, como celebração do sentido.
The poetic theatre of Maurice Maeterlinck in its unique symbolist aesthetic develops a relationship between the word and the representation of the "tragic interior" found in the categories of silence, absence and of the invisible that contributed greatly to a new orientation at the end of the 19th century theatre. In strict line with the mimesis crisis and the realist illusion, the Maeterlinck theatre weaves a privileged dialogue with the Mallarmé Book project and with the equations between "drama", "mystery" and "music" present since its first theatrical acts. In that continuing line, the symbolist theatre of Maurice Maeterlinck, or in other words, the desecration of the transparent syntax and the rationality are necessary to understand the ontological complexity of modern man, as if to demonstrate what Mallarme advocated: the always new life of Literature, as overcoming nothing, as celebration of meaning.
