- Painting on canvas-three sample preparation approaches for fibres optical microscope identificationPublication . Morais, Rita Maltieira; Calvo, Ana; Cunha, JoanaIn Portuguese painting, canvas is a common structural support. However, the historical documentation, material and technique on this fabric support are scarce. From the research that is being performed on the canvas in Portuguese painting, since its implementation to its industrial production, this article focuses on the challenges existing in the fibre preparation for microscopic examination. Since paintings are layered structures, fibres are usually impregnated with dust and various materials who migrated from other layers. To clean the micro-samples, three approaches of preparation were performed. The effectiveness of the cleaning of the fibres, for microscopic observation of their morphological characteristics, it is more difficult to achieve than the texts suggest.
- The “value-function" attributed to cultural heritage as a criterion for reconstruction or reintegration: the paintingsPublication . Bailão, Ana; Calvo, AnaThe intervention criteria applied to old objects and paintings in each historical period, in the treatment of reconstruction and reintegration of the form and the lost colours, has depended of the value-function attributed. The conservation and restoration processes applied in each period have relied on the values given to each type of goods. So it has been able to prevail the aesthetic, historical, documentary, or other values. To understand the history of interventions in the objects of the past it is necessary first understand the social and cultural bases that determine the criteria used at different times and in different cultures. Furthermore, the current criteria for reintegration are determined by the “values” that now we apply to different cultural objects, including paintings by their role or function at this time.
- Colorimetric analysis of two watercolours used in retouchingPublication . Bailão, Ana; San Andrés, Margarita; Calvo, AnaPrussia blue and phthalo blue have a particularly importance in retouching because they provided a considerable amount of green and they are also transparent, which will give strong clear greens when needed during the retouching practice. The objective of this experiment is to evaluate the colorimetric change of the two cited pigments, in watercolours, after being exposed to direct sunlight for one year, comparing the results with another two samples protected from solar radiation, and also analyse the spectral curves similarity between both. The pigments are of the brand Artist´s Watercolour of Winsor & Newton. Colour variations were determined in the uniform colour space called CIELAB. The results show that phtalo is more stable than Prussian blue.
