The understanding we have of the place and mission of the laity in the life of the Church is deeply connected to the notion we have of the Church itself. Ecclesiology is, therefore, the area in which a theology of the laity could be developed. But which ecclesiology? What is the vision of the Church in which the laity have their rightful place recognised?This study examines the connection between ecclesiology and the theology of the laity. After analysing how this issue emerged in the 20th century, the first chapter sets out the fundamental ecclesiological principles necessary for a theology of the laity, without which every vision of the lay condition will either be too narrow or exaggerated. In a second moment, Vatican II and post-conciliar theology on the mission of the laity in the Church and in the world is systematised. Finally, the third chapter addresses the theme of synodality, developed mainly during the pontificate of Pope Francis, and its contribution to an approach to lay identity and mission.
