Lopes, José Manuel MartinsThis article reflects on the exercise of power in spiritual contexts, drawing on Ignatian tradition and the current debate within the Catholic Church on abuses of power, authority, and conscience. It highlights how clericalism, the manipulation of vulnerability, and the misuse of obedience can generate abusive dynamics that undermine freedom, dignity, and trust. At the same time, it argues that fidelity to the Gospel and a renewed understanding of authority as service constitute the only path to regenerate both personal relationships and ecclesial institutions. Vulnerability, far from being mere weakness, can also be a place of encounter and care, requiring transparency, co-responsibility, and discernment to overcome a culture of abuse and to foster a culture of care.

- “Cancel culture” ao serviço da ganância e da tirania: alguns exemplos da antiguidade clássica nos Annales de TácitoPublication . Lopes, Maria José Ferreira“Cancel culture” has become a central topic in debates on freedom of expression in Western societies. Initially seen as spontaneous and transient, recent cases reveal the influence of organized pressure groups whose activism extends beyond social media, sometimes threatening academic freedom and the plurality of debate. In a digital environment that fosters simplification and polarization, such practices risk undermining dignity, truth, and freedom. This paper draws a parallel with classical antiquity, recalling Tacitus’ account of political and literary persecution under Tiberius (Annales 4.34–35), to highlight the continuity of mechanisms of “cancellation” from antiquity to the present.

Ferreira, Rita Margarida Mendonça; Marques, Pedro Maia GarciaFollowing the adoption of Directive (EU) 2024/1069 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 April, the main objective of this dissertation is to frame and explain the phenomenon of SLAPPs (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation). The first part of this dissertation will be dedicated to the clarification of concepts and the historical and cultural framework of SLAPPs. This will be followed by a comparative law analysis of the impact of SLAPPs in other legal systems, along with an examination of Recommendation CM/Rec(2024)2 and Directive (EU) 2024/1069 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 April. This study will also focus on the relevant national legal provisions on the subject, as well as on the predominant legal scholarship concerning freedom of expression.

With great stylistic diversity, music is also distinguished by the variety of ways it resonates with individuals and how it is received by them. In this context, can music constitute a concrete means of encounter between the human and the divine? To address this inquiry in a plausible and well-founded manner, the present work begins with an exposition of Augustine’s of Hippo reflection on art as a means of access to the divine, exploring the relevance of music to the human experience. Next, using selected works by Johann Sebastian Bach as reference, the study will investigate how music, analyzed through the lens of symbolism, can enhance the encounter with Beauty. Finally, the work will discuss the main challenges posed by contemporary music, both to those who approach the musical work through listening, and to composers and performers, reflecting on the implications of these challenges for the reception and interpretation of music.
