- Sensor based sleep patterns and reported sleep quality in breast cancer patients undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapyPublication . Malveiro, Carla; Boavida, Sofia; Cargaleiro, Catarina; Bernardino, Ana V.; Correia, Inês R.; Reis, Cátia; Matos, Leonor; Sardinha, Luis B.; Cardoso, Maria João; Saint-Maurice, Pedro F.Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in women worldwide and its treatment often leads to the onset of sleep disturbances. While much research has focused on chemotherapy’s impact on overall sleep quality through subjective measures, less attention has been given to its effects on specific sleep metrics such as duration, timing, continuity, and naps. This preliminary study addresses this gap by assessing sleep duration, timing, and regularity, using the Emfit QS device over 100 consecutive days in 24 breast cancer patients undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Additionally, we incorporated the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to measure reported sleep quality. Our results suggest that chemotherapy may influence the duration for time spent in bed (ptrend=0.02) measured by the Emfit QS. Duration in bed decreased over the first seven weeks (e.g., 9.3 h/day at week 1 vs. 8.5 h/day at week 8), and increased thereafter to similar amounts as those recorded in week 1 (9.0 h/day at week 15). Sleep timing and regularity, also measured by the Emfit QS, remained unchanged. Overall sleep quality, as measured by the PSQI, did not change over time. However, our analysis of the individual components of the PSQI revealed that sleep disturbances increased as treatment progressed from week 1 to week 8 (1.3 ± 0.6 to 1.7 ± 0.6; p=0.01), concurrently with an increase in insomnia symptoms. Approximately, 33%, 63%, and 73% reported having insomnia symptoms at week 1, 8, and 15. These findings highlight critical periods during treatment when patients are vulnerable to disrupted sleep. Future research should focus on interventions to mitigate sleep disturbances, improving patient wellbeing and overall quality of life.
- The regulatory impact of digital currencies on EU based businesses : the freedom to provide services under MiCAPublication . Kagan, David; Vicente, Marta de Sousa NunesThe Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation is the European Union’s most ambitious attempt to create a single harmonized legal framework for digital currencies. Redacted in a technological neutral language, this Regulations aims to resolve legal ambiguity, improve consumer protection, and guarantee financial stability for retail consumers, and, consequentially, guarantee a stable Internal Market. This dissertation examines the regulatory impact of the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation on EU based businesses, focusing on market access, competition, proportionality and the ability to offer services freely under EU law. This study evaluates whether it simplifies cross-border transactions or creates regulatory barriers for businesses within its interpretation and application.
- Oral health and the microbiome dysbiosis in inflammatory bowel diseasePublication . Cardoso, Catarina Pereira; Gomes, Ana Teresa Peixoto de Campos; Veiga, Nélio JorgeInflammatory bowel disease (IBD), encompassing Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract closely linked to microbiota imbalances. While the role of gut microbiota in IBD has been extensively explored, the contribution of the oral microbiome remains less understood. Dysbiosis of the oral microbiota in IBD patients has been associated with an increased prevalence of oral diseases such as caries and periodontitis. Moreover, therapeutic interventions for IBD can alter microbial composition, with some bacteria emerging as potential predictors of treatment response. This study aims to systematically review the literature on microbiome dysbiosis in IBD and its impact on patients’ oral health. A comprehensive systematic search was performed using the electronic databases PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane to identify studies with relevant data. This review was carried out in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, addressing a research question structured using the Population, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcomes (PICO) framework. Four hundred and sixty-nine articles potentially relevant were identified and after applying PRISMA guidelines and inclusion/exclusion criteria, twelve articles were included in this review. The results suggest a consistent dysbiosis of the oral and gut microbiome in IBD, marked by reduced diversity and enrichment of pro-inflammatory bacteria, particularly Prevotella, Veillonella, and Fusobacterium. It also emphasized the close relationship between oral health and IBD, with common oral manifestations such as periodontitis, reinforcing the relevance of the oral microbiome as both a mirror and potential driver of systemic inflammation. These insights highlight the need for integrated dental and gastrointestinal care. Further research is needed to confirm microbial markers, understand causal mechanisms, and assess how interventions may restore microbial balance and improve clinical outcomes.
- The internationalization of wine in Mexico : imports, domestic market growth, and export potentialPublication . Espinosa, Paola Herrera; Reis, RicardoUsing five fundamental SME internationalization models- the Uppsala Model, Network Theory, Born Global Theory, Porter's Diamond Model, and Cluster Theory- this thesis investigates the internationalization tactics of small and medium-sized wine producers in Mexico. Instead of concentrating on wine as a product, this study examines how these theoretical frameworks perform in an emerging market scenario utilizing the Mexican wine business as an empirical instance. The study used a mixed-methods approach, integrating trade data, expert interviews, and comparative analysis with Chile, Portugal, and Argentina. It concludes that Mexican wineries encounter major structural obstacles, such as a small production scale, disjointed branding, and a lack of institutional support. But the sector also gains from distinctive terroirs, rising internet literacy, and a rise in demand for boutique, genuine wine around the world. The results show that while digital-first and born-global strategies are becoming more popular, relationship-based (Network) and experiential (Uppsala) models better describe contemporary export practices. Although immature, institutional and ecosystem-based frameworks are essential. In order to facilitate the successful internationalization of Mexican wine and the creation of a worldwide identity based on cooperation and authenticity, the thesis ends with a strategic roadmap.
- The network internationalization model applied to construction professional service companyPublication . Almeida, Ricardo António Praça; Reis, RicardoIn an increasingly globalized economy, the international expansion is no longer exclusive to large multinational corporations. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are progressively exploring opportunities beyond domestic markets. Among these, Construction Professional Services (CPS) companies - characterized by their project-based operations, reliance on technical expertise, and proximity to physical construction activities - face a unique set of challenges and opportunities when attempting to internationalize. While international business literature has examined manufacturing and technology-based companies, less attention has been given to professional services in the construction sector, particularly to those operating at a micro or SME scale. This thesis aims to contribute to this underexplored area by investigating the internationalization process of a Portuguese CPS company, Bessa Araújo. Although it is a micro-company with a highly skilled team, the company has managed to operate successfully across various geographies, including Latin America and Africa. Using a qualitative, case-based methodology, this study analyzes the motivations that drove the company abroad, the strategies employed, and the operational, institutional, and cultural challenges encountered along the way. By drawing on interviews and first-hand accounts from the key decision-maker within Bessa Araújo, this research provides insight into how micro-CPS companies can adapt to complex international environments, often with limited resources. Special attention is given to issues such as human capital transfer, regulatory requirements, technological logistics, and cost-control strategies. The findings aim not only to enrich the academic discourse on SME internationalization but also to offer practical implications for similar firms seeking to expand their operations internationally.
- Understanding generation Z’s perception of responsible leadership : expectations and future implicationsPublication . Rovai, Matilde Aylin Giuliana Alfreda; Cavicchini, AndreaThis thesis investigates the perception of responsible leadership through the lens of Generation Z's values and perspectives. Through this research, we aim to identify the attributes that Generation Z considers essential for a responsible leader and their perceptions of these abilities. A qualitative study was conducted utilizing in-depth interviews with Gen Z individuals to ascertain their expectations of a responsible leader. This study uses a qualitative method to determine the appropriateness of Responsible Leadership among Generation Z and its implications for their relationships. Interviews indicate that Generation Z leaders seek responsible, transparent, and values-oriented leadership, and they consider RL's sustainable economic, social, and environmental results, aligned with the Triple Bottom Line, to be advantageous. Ultimately, when Generation Z enters the workforce, their expectations for leaders to prioritize social responsibility and sustainability will influence leadership paradigms. This research contributes to the literature on leadership and generational cohorts.
- Uniqueness and WTP : an ESG approachPublication . Baldi, Tommaso; Cavicchini, AndreaIn a world where environmental and social sustainability issues have now reached absolute levels of prevalence, the proper implementation of an ESG strategy has become, for a company, of vital importance. Far from being just a moral decision, opting for the correct strategy in this field can lead to better financial results and companies are becoming more and more aware of this. In the vast world of sustainable investments, my work focuses on uniqueness of a company’s offer for what concern its ESG portfolio. While it was shown that, in specific circumstances, a more unique ESG portfolio might result in better financial returns, I intended to delve into an as-yet unexamined topic, that being the relationship between this ESG uniqueness and consumers’ WTP. Through an empirical study I conducted and from the data analysis that followed I was able to understand how products from a more unique company experience greater variability in price changes depending on customer’s attitude on sustainability, in contrast, companies with more mainstream ESG profiles exhibited more stable pricing patterns, less influenced by consumer positioning on the issue.
- Between promise and practice : work-life balance policy decoupling in consultingPublication . Kirchberg, Marlene Wichtrud; Fioravante, RosaTo attract top talent, organizations such as consulting promote work-life balance (WLB) policies. Yet, despite public commitments, ongoing reports about employee dissatisfaction suggest a gap between effort and outcome. This study investigates how WLB policies align, or fail to align, with the lived experiences of consultants and examines how organizations can prevent both policy-practice and means-ends decoupling. The study adopts an inductive approach, relying on a qualitative methodology, using Gioia methodology for data analysis. The database has gathered qualitative interviews with consultants and HR personnel to explore the ethical and organizational dynamics at play. Findings reveal that WLB remains more exception than norm, with weak policy design facilitating decoupling. The findings indicate low awareness of WLB policies, limited usage, and, even when used, a failure to achieve the intended outcomes. The study discusses internalized “client-first” as a form of decoupling and the prevention of such as a key lever for organizations. It contributes to the literature on WLB within business ethics scholarship, by uncovering how internalized professional norms and organizational inaction jointly contribute to the ethical failure of WLB policy implementation. This study contributes to decoupling literature by adding a novel empirical application in the consulting sector and in the context of WLB policies, offering insights into previously neglected prevention mechanisms, and uncovering internalized beliefs as a sign of decoupling. Practically, the study identifies top-down communication and role-modelling by managers as suitable prevention measures to challenge the client-first norm, thereby helping to ensure WLB policies move beyond symbolic compliance.
- Cultivating resilience in a volatile market : a case study of DHL global forwarding’s strategic adaptation during the global energy crisisPublication . Hoang, My Linh; Reis, RicardoThis thesis explores the strategic responses of DHL Global Forwarding (DGF), a leading player in the freight forwarding industry, to the energy disruption between 2021 and 2023. During this period, the global freight transport sector faced significant challenges, including record-high freight rates, fluctuating trade volumes, and widespread port congestion. DGF, in turn, contended with reduced freight demand and pressures on service performance. Using a qualitative case study approach that integrates secondary data with insights from interviews with senior DGF executives, this research investigates how the company leveraged its core capabilities to navigate a rapidly evolving market landscape. By fostering a culture of ownership and collaboration, embracing digital technologies to enhance visibility and operational efficiency, and prioritizing sustainability, DGF improved its service quality, employee engagement and financial performance. The findings highlight the importance of long-term strategic planning and organizational simplification in cultivating agility and resilience during periods of disruption. Although focused on a single company, the dissertation offers valuable pedagogical insights and actionable lessons for strategic management in dynamic environments.
