- To what extent does transformational leadership communication style influence employee self-perception of flourishing?Publication . Malta, Mariana Castro Louro Maia; Tavares, Patrícia Isabel Ramos Pego NunesThis dissertation addresses the leaders' communication style on employees flourishing and self-perception of flourishing. The defined variables for the research analysis comprise leadership and communication, the evolution of flourishing, and organizational commitment as a powerful organizational outcome. Communication is the main conductor of human life, so if effectively implemented, leadership through effective and competent communication can benefit both the employee and the organization. A leader’s communication that motivates, creates a culture of shared value, and is seen as a resource for help, can foster employees’ growth, leading to a flourishing workforce. Flourishing is a process toward complete well-being and is seen as a continuous process rather than a goal to be accomplished. It’s measured through emotional, physical, and psychological well-being. Several have proposed defined components to measure flourishing, and even though there isn’t a consensus, dimensions such as positive emotions, close relationships, motivation, purpose, and sense of belonging, are common components in flourishing measurement frameworks. An employee who is flourishing is one who feels good and positive, is happy with his work and personal life, and most importantly, with him/herself. Hence, this dissertation argues that flourishing employees have a higher sense of commitment towards the organization, as it’s where they feel confident, rewarded, and have a sense of career growth. The study design aims to understand the extent of a transformational communication leadership approach in employee's self-perception of flourishing, by resorting to a crosssectional design, with an inquiry per questionnaire strategy and a convenience snowball sampling that gathered 168 valid responses. The study also aims at understanding the employee’s perception of leaders’ communication competence, linking it to transformational communication leadership and employee self-perceptions of flourishing. Lastly, due to the organizational context of the analysis, the study assesses the linkage between employee self-perception of flourishing under transformational communication leadership and levels of employee commitment.
- A comparative study of verbal and visual self-representations: body image and health aspirations of Brazilian and French womenPublication . Silva, Ariane Franco Lopes da; Cohen, GoldaThis study aims to comparatively analyse how young adult women from Brazil and France perceive their bodies and health, through both verbal and visual self-representations. The theory of social representations offers the theoretical framework for this study. A total of 164 women aged 18 to 20 (82 from Brazil and 82 from France) participated in the research. They responded to a questionnaire with word association technique, open-ended sentences and drawing tasks. The data were analysed by the content analysis and visual analysis techniques. The results reveal both com- mon and diverse perspectives and expectations concerning body image, aging, and health. They also show varying perceptions of which body parts require monitoring and control while highlighting contrasts in body satisfaction and dissatisfaction. These results were interpreted through the lens of culture and life experiences. This investigation contributes to a better understanding of both uniformity and diversity in body representations and aids the design of community educational and mental health projects in culturally diverse societies.
- Inclusion of pineapple by-products as natural antioxidant sources in diets for European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax)Publication . Pereira, Ricardo; Basto, Ana; Pintado, Manuela; Valente, Luisa M. P.; Velasco, CristinaThis study investigates the effects of pineapple by-products on feed preservation during storage at two different temperatures (25 °C and 4 °C) and on European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) stress resistance. Four isoproteic, isolipidic, and isoenergetic diets were manufactured: CTRL—negative control, commercial diet without added antioxidants; VITE—positive control, CTRL diet with 100 mg kg−1 of vitamin E; and P2 and S2—VITE diet with 2% pineapple peel or stem flour, respectively. The fish (13.5 ± 0.8 g) were split into four replicate groups per diet and fed ad libitum for 12 weeks, after which they were subjected to a stress challenge of air exposure (1 min) followed by confinement (5 min, 100 kg m−3). Despite storage time lowering the antioxidant properties of all diets, P2 and S2 showed increased antioxidant capacity (DPPH•, ABTS•+, and ORAC) before and after storage. The diets were well accepted by the fish, and the VITE-fed fish showed significantly lower lipid peroxidation values in the liver and muscle compared to all remaining diets. However, pineapple by-product inclusion did not result in increased fish stress resistance. Further optimization is required for the successful use of pineapple by-products as natural antioxidants in aquafeeds.
