- Nature-based solutions for urban agriculture in buildings: challenges and opportunitiesPublication . Wai Ma, Man; Pereira, Sofia; Calheiros, CristinaInsight is given to food security being an actual issue of concern due to rapid growth of global population, availability of arable land and consequently increase demand of food. Some problems associated with climate change such as extreme weather and soil degradation will also affect the quality and quantity of crops. On the other hand, urban area with high population relies on rural area to supply food ingredients. The linear food system creates environmental problems such as carbon footprint for transportation and increase packaging materials waste. Current Covid-19 pandemic situation adds on pressure on developed cities with mere local agriculture such as Macao. Macao depends on mainland China for fresh fruits and vegetables supply since local production is not the main trend. Due to the above reasons, this study intents to provide a new insight on food production in urban context towards a more sustainable and healthier environment using nature-based solutions. Assessment of indoor farming feasibility in city will be carried out by literature review and business entities interviews. A survey will be developed about the public acceptance to produce food in buildings with nature-based solutions. The methodology will proceed with a state-of-the-art assessment followed by a systematic review focused on selected NBS. Statical analysis will be carried out for data assessment.

- Floating islands implementation in marine and freshwater environmentsPublication . Octaviano, A. L. M.; Imbernon, R.; Pereira, S. I. A.; Martina, I.; Calheiros, C. S. C.Rapid industrialization, changes in human activities, and agricultural practices have led to the widespread use of toxic organic compounds, resulting in increased concentrations of pollutants in the environment that can be transmitted through air, water, or soil, resulting in numerous environmental and health problems. Therefore, the efficient management of water in these polluted sites is urgently needed. Aiming at this, this work proposes the use of floating wetland islands (FWI) for phytoremediation of these environments, since they have a great potential to promote several ecosystem services, such as biodiversity and water quality improvement. Having that in consideration it will be carried out an assessment related to the most adequate materials for the floating platform to be applied in marine and freshwater environments. Plants will be selected based on previous research carried out by the group It is intended that the floating platform developed under the present study will be compared with a commercial system cork based. It will be monitored the plant development and establishment in the two floating platforms materials and environments, the associated fauna and the water characterization. From the analysis of these results, this work hopes that these nature-based solutions can contribute to better water management, in such a way that will involve the conservation and rehabilitation of ecosystems.
- Long term application of a constructed wetland for phytoremediation of domestic wastewater: macrofauna biodiversity assessmentPublication . Magalhães, João; Pereira, Sofia; IIarri, Martina; Leong, Chi M.; Calheiros, CristinaConstructed wetlands (CW) are engineered systems, phytoremediation based, that mimic several processes (physical, biological, and chemical) that occur in natural wetlands. They comprise several components, impermeabilization liners and substrate, and as the key elements the plants and their associated microorganisms. They were thought primarily for wastewater treatment but nowadays are considered a nature-based solution of excellence in terms of flexibility of their application and services provided. In the present study, the phytoremediation potential of a real scale constructed wetland to treat wastewater from a tourism unity is addressed. The CW was implemented in 2010 at Paço de Calheiros, a tourism house integrated in a rural area. The CW was designed to be placed after a previously installed septic tank that acted as the main treatment before the CW was established. It is a horizontal subsurface flow system planted with a polyculture of Agapanthus africanus, Canna flaccida, Zantedeschia aethiopica, Canna indica, and Watsonia borbonica. The aim of the study is to monitor the efficiency of a CW, after long term operation, based on phytoremediation processes, to treat the wastewater from the tourism unit. Wastewater quality will be assessed through the analysis of physic-chemical and microbiological parameters towards its reuse for irrigation purposes. The biodiversity of macrofauna communities associated to the rhizosphere of selected plants and substrate will be studied.

- Effectiveness of educational interventions to increase skills in evidence-based practice among nurses: the EDITcare systematic reviewPublication . Santos, Omar Portela dos; Melly, Pauline; Hilfiker, Roger; Giacomino, Katia; Perruchoud, Elodie; Verloo, Henk; Pereira, FilipaBackground: Using evidence-based practice (EBP) improves the implementation of safe, high-quality healthcare for patients, reduces avoidable costs, and plays a crucial role in bridging knowledge–action gaps and reducing health inequities. EBP combines the best available evidence in the relevant literature with patient preferences and values and healthcare professionals’ (HCPs) expertise. Methods: Systematic searches of ten bibliographic databases, unpublished works, and the Grey Literature Report sought studies published up to 30 September 2022. Results: The 15 studies retained involved 2712 nurses. Three types of effective educational interventions were identified: (1) multifaceted educational strategies incorporating mentoring and tutoring; (2) single educational strategies, often delivered online; and (3) multifaceted educational strategies using the five steps of EBP. Eleven primary outcomes (EBP beliefs, EBP self-efficacy, perceived EBP implementation, EBP competencies, EBP knowledge, EBP skills, EBP attitudes, EBP behaviors, EBP desire, EBP practice, and perceptions of organizational culture and readiness) were assessed using 13 qualitative and quantitative instruments. Conclusions: Ensuring the successful implementation of EBP requires effective educational strategies. Computer-based learning seems the most cost-effective and efficient strategy, when considering caregivers’ characteristics, the clinical field, and educational interventions across the pre-, peri-, and post-implementation processes.

- Mastering new technologies: does it relate to teleworkers’ (in)voluntariness and well-being?Publication . Dias, Paulo; Lopes, Sílvia; Peixoto, RicardoPurpose: This study aims to examine the associations among mastering new technologies, teleworkers’ voluntariness and involuntariness and employee well-being (i.e. work engagement and exhaustion). To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no studies have explored the relationships among these constructs in the same conceptual model. Design/methodology/approach: Data were collected from a sample of 451 individuals performing telework in Portugal. AMOS was used to test all hypotheses of the study. Findings: The findings showed a positive relationship between mastering new technologies and teleworkers’ voluntariness and a negative relationship between mastering new technologies and teleworkers’ involuntariness. However, contrary to expectations, voluntariness in teleworking was not significantly related to either work engagement or exhaustion. However, consistent with the theoretical background of self-determination theory, involuntariness in teleworking was negatively related to work engagement and positively related to exhaustion. Originality/value: This study contributes to the literature by addressing the analysis of telework-related variables that may impact workers’ well-being. Implications for human resource management policies and knowledge management are discussed.
