- Preliminary validation study of the intrinsic religious motivation scale and the centrality of religiosity scale for the Portuguese populationPublication . Araújo, Pedro; Gomes, Sara; Vidal, Diogo Guedes; Sousa, Hélder Fernando Pedrosa e; Dinis, Maria Alzira Pimenta; Leite, ÂngelaReligion is a construct widely present in most people’s lives. Religious motivations, either intrinsic or extrinsic, as well as religious centrality, are crucial aspects of religion. In the Portuguese population, there are no validated instruments to assess these aspects of religion. Accordingly, this study intends to validate the Intrinsic Religious Motivation Scale (IRMS) and the Centrality of Religiosity Scale (CRS) for the Portuguese population. This is a validation study whose sample consists of 326 participants (73.1% women) from the general population. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were carried out and the correlations between the constructs and self-compassion were determined to assess the convergent and divergent validity. The results obtained confirm the existence of models adjusted to the population, allowing us to conclude that the instruments are reliable for assessing the studied constructs. The validation of the IRMS and CRS for the Portuguese population is of outstanding importance, as it provides researchers in the field with valid instruments and psychometric qualities to carry out research within religion and religiosity.
- Translation, cultural adaptation, and validation of the Venous International Assessment Scale to European PortuguesePublication . Santos-Costa, Paulo; Sousa, Liliana B.; de La Torre-Montero, Julio C.; Salgueiro-Oliveira, Anabela; Parreira, Pedro; Vieira, Margarida; Graveto, JoãoBackground: A significant number of adult patients experience difficult peripheral intravenous ac-cess, leading to multiple puncture attempts and venous network depletion. The Venous International Assessment (VIA) Scale is referenced internationally as a reliable instrument that classifies patients’ peripheral intravenous accesses and determines the risk of related complications. Objectives: To translate, culturally adapt and validate the VIA Scale to European Portuguese. Methodology: Study of the translation, cultural adaptation, and evaluation of the psychometric prop-erties of the VIA Scale in a nonprobability sample with 100 patients in need of peripheral intravenous catheterization. Results: The Portuguese version of the VIA Scale (EARV) revealed moderate inter-rater reliability scores (k = 0.490; p < 0.0005). The criterion and construct validity of the EARV were assessed through predictive, convergent, and correlational analysis, with moderate to large magnitudes, and statistical significance. Conclusion: The EARV is a reliable and valid instrument that can assist Portuguese health professionals in determining and categorizing difficult peripheral intravenous access. Further studies are recommended to test the transversal applicability of the scale.
- Effect of bone loss on the fracture resistance of narrow dental implants after implantoplasty. An in vitro studyPublication . Leitão-Almeida, Bruno; Camps-Font, Octavi; Correia, André; Mir-Mari, Javier; Figueiredo, Rui; Valmaseda-Castellon, EduardBackground: Implantoplasty (IP) involves polishing of the exposed surface of implants affected by peri-implantitis (PI). A study was made to determine whether the degree of bone loss influences the fracture resistance of implants with or without IP. Material and Methods: An in vitro study was carried out on 32 narrow (3.5 mm) dental implants with a rough surface and external hexagonal connection. Implantoplasty was performed in half of the implants of the sample. Both the IP and control implants were divided into two subgroups according to the amount of bone loss (3 mm or 7.5 mm). Standardized radiographic assessment of implant width was performed using specific software. The main outcome variable was the maximum compression force (F-max) of implants when subjected to static resistance to fracture tests. Implant fractures were subsequently analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. A descriptive and bivariate analysis of the data was performed. Results: Significant changes in implant width were observed after IP (p<0.05). No significant differences between IP and control implants were recorded in terms of the F-max values in the two bone loss subgroups (3 mm: control 854.37N +/- 195.08 vs. IP 752.12N +/- 186.13;p =0.302, and 7.5 mm: control 548.82N +/- 80.02 vs. IP 593.69N +/- 111.07; p-0.370). Greater bone loss was associated to a decrease in F-max which proved significant for the control implants (p=0.001). Fractures were more frequently located in the platform (n=13). Conclusions: Implants with more apical bone levels appear to be more susceptible to fracture. On the other hand, IP does not seem to significantly decrease the fracture resistance of narrow (3.5 mm) platform dental implants with external hexagonal connections. The fact that most fractures occur in the platform area indicates that the latter is exposed to more mechanical stress.

- Art casting in Portuguese 19th century industrial foundries: a multi-analytical study of an emblematic copper-based alloy monumentPublication . General-Toro, Pablo; Bordalo, Rui; Moreira, Patrícia Raquel; Vieira, Eduarda; Brunetti, Antonio; Iannaccone, Roberta; Bottaini, CarloThe outdoor sculpture of the first Portuguese king, D. Afonso Henriques (~1109 – 1185 AD), placed in Guimarães (North Portugal) is one of the most emblematic national sculptures. Created in 1887 by António Soares dos Reis, it possesses a remarkable symbolic value in the presumed birthplace of the king. In addition to the artistic and heritage importance of the monument, it is one of the few sculptures cast by a Portuguese industrial foundry in the 19th-century. This study obtained data on the sculpture's elemental composition and corrosion products, gathering important historical and technical information. For this purpose, a multi-analytical approach consisting of X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS) was carried out to characterise the bulk metal and corrosion layers. The data revealed a ternary alloy of Cu, Sn, Zn with Pb, Fe, As, Bi and Mn as minor elements. The alloy matches that of other sculptures cast in that period. In terms of corrosion, it is characterised by the presence of oxides. These results represent the first step for applying an appropriate conservation strategy for bronze sculptures with similar characteristics.
- Non-voting preferred shares in Portugal: a general overviewPublication . Pessoa, DiogoIn this article we intend to provide a general overview of the Portuguese legal framework regarding the non-voting preferred shares (NVPS). We have also highlighted some of the issues and concerns that may be the reason to justify the almost no use of such shares.
- The role of the service manager's perceived career success in frontline employees’ learning processes and service improvementPublication . Jong, Ad de; Schepers, Jeroen J. L.; Lages, Cristiana R.; Kadić-Maglajlić, SelmaPrevious literature fails to offer firms consistent guidelines on how successful managers may enhance or reduce the potential to learn from frontline service encounters. In addressing this research gap, this study contributes to the frontline employee (FLE) literature by 1) investigating the contingency role of managers’ perceived career success in FLEs’ personal learning process, 2) distinguishing between FLEs’ service-related and context-related personal learning, and 3) accounting for both exploratory and exploitative learning. This study uses two datasets: an exploratory dataset on 253 FLEs and a multilevel and multisource dataset on 444 FLEs and 55 service managers. Findings reveal that managers who are unsuccessful in their careers still stimulate frontline learning processes, but their subordinates generally use only their service-related personal learning to generate ideas for service improvement. Successful managers are better able to guide their FLEs in how to turn context-related learning into service improvement.
