- Civil society takes the wheel: UNSC resolution 1325 and the path towards sustainable peacePublication . Dias, Mónica; Caria, CatarinaResolution 1325’s contribution to a more sustainable peace is now widely recognized, not only in post-conflict settings, but also in preventing violence, in various forms, in contexts of immanent or latent conflict. One of the most important factors for the Resolution’s success lies in its influence on civil society, but also in the impact that civil society itself has on the application and operationalization of this Resolution, revealing the gender perspective as essential and generating a dynamic of very fertile reciprocity for the possibility of peace. In the article, we will analyze the impelling action of civil society for the affirmation of women as central actors in peace processes - as well as in the political, social, economic and cultural reconstruction that follows. Through several examples and suggestions, we will see how this dynamic for sustainable peace was reinforced and expanded through the Sustainable Development Goals and the special place reserved there for women.
- A pilot study combining ultrafiltration with ozonation for the treatment of secondary urban wastewater: organic micropollutants, microbial load and biological effectsPublication . Graça, Cátia A. L.; Ribeirinho-Soares, Sara; Abreu-Silva, Joana; Ramos, Inês I.; Ribeiro, Ana R.; Castro-Silva, Sérgio M.; Segundo, Marcela A.; Manaia, Célia M.; Nunes, Olga C.; Silva, Adrián M. T.Ozonation followed by ultrafiltration (O3 + UF) was employed at pilot scale for the treatment of secondary urban wastewater, envisaging its safe reuse for crop irrigation. Chemical contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) and priority substances (PSs), microbial load, estrogenic activity, cell viability and cellular metabolic activity were measured before and immediately after O3 + UF treatment. The microbial load was also evaluated after one-week storage of the treated water to assess potential bacteria regrowth. Among the organic micropollutants detected, only citalopram and isoproturon were not removed below the limit of quantification. The treatment was also effective in the reduction in the bacterial loads considering current legislation in water quality for irrigation (i.e., in terms of enterobacteria and nematode eggs). However, after seven days of storage, total heterotrophs regrew to levels close to the initial, with the concomitant increase in the genes 16S rRNA and intI1. The assessment of biological effects revealed similar water quality before and after treatment, meaning that O3 + UF did not produce detectable toxic by-products. Thus, the findings of this study indicate that the wastewater treated with this technology comply with the water quality standards for irrigation, even when stored up to one week, although improvements must be made to minimise microbial overgrowth.
- Seroprevalence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in COVID-19 patients and healthy volunteers up to 6 months post disease onsetPublication . Figueiredo-Campos, Patrícia; Blankenhaus, Birte; Mota, Catarina; Gomes, Andreia; Serrano, Marta; Ariotti, Silvia; Costa, Catarina; Nunes-Cabaço, Helena; Mendes, António M.; Gaspar, Pedro; Pereira-Santos, M. Conceição; Rodrigues, Fabiana; Condeço, Jorge; Escoval, M. Antonia; Santos, Matilde; Ramirez, Mario; Melo-Cristino, José; Simas, J. Pedro; Vasconcelos, Eugenia; Afonso, Ângela; Veldhoen, MarcSARS-CoV-2 has emerged as a human pathogen, causing clinical signs, from fever to pneumonia—COVID-19—but may remain mild or asymptomatic. To understand the continuing spread of the virus, to detect those who are and were infected, and to follow the immune response longitudinally, reliable and robust assays for SARS-CoV-2 detection and immunological monitoring are needed. We quantified IgM, IgG, and IgA antibodies recognizing the SARS-CoV-2 receptor-binding domain (RBD) or the Spike (S) protein over a period of 6 months following COVID-19 onset. We report the detailed setup to monitor the humoral immune response from over 300 COVID-19 hospital patients and healthcare workers, 2500 University staff, and 198 post-COVID-19 volunteers. Anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody responses follow a classic pattern with a rapid increase within the first three weeks after symptoms. Although titres reduce subsequently, the ability to detect anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies remained robust with confirmed neutralization activity for up to 6 months in a large proportion of previously virus-positive screened subjects. Our work provides detailed information for the assays used, facilitating further and longitudinal analysis of protective immunity to SARS-CoV-2. Importantly, it highlights a continued level of circulating neutralising antibodies in most people with confirmed SARS-CoV-2.
- Engaging stakeholders in traditional food products through dissemination of knowledge and innovation based in digital platformsPublication . Oliveira, Leandro; Cardoso, Eduardo LuísThe agrofood sector has a wide sectorial and business dispersion, constituting, in parallel, a relevant space of the European and national economy. In addition to the economic and social impact, the growth of the sector is an opportunity for the development of rural areas and agriculture, particularly given Europe's shortages in raw food materials. The need for continuous improvement, and market developments of this sector, require that innovation processes occur. These innovation processes have been facilitated by the development of in-formation and communication technologies, and by the emergence of social networks that facilitate knowledge sharing. The NEWFOOD — Food Technologies Valorization Project is framed in the field of Knowledge and Technology Transfer and is oriented towards inno-vation in traditional food products. One of its objectives is to actively disseminate knowl-edge, skills and resources to the entities involved, including stakeholders from the relevant economic sectors. This paper aims to identify and describe the role of social networks and other digital plat-forms used to meet this goal and the impact achieved. This research involved a single explor-atory case study, with a conceptual knowledge management model and included primary data collected through documents developed for the NEWFOOD project, social networks/digital platforms, and observations of some project actions. Several digital contents were developed and distributed to bring innovators and researchers to promote innovations in traditional food products and to raise sector stakeholder’s awareness about the potential of exploitation. Social media support tools associated with the project (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube), and the platforms (Knowledge Portfolio, innovation platform) reached some 6000 followers/shareholders like students, entrepreneurs and other professionals in the sector. NEWFOOD project allowed the participation of 15 teams of stakeholders in an innovation program and contest and added innovation to 15 Portuguese traditional food products. Our results supported by the dissemination materials developed and by the social networks used contributed to promoting technological innovation and for generating of new ideas for products in this sector, and the alignment between stakeholders.
