- A European Union of security and defense : seizing the momentPublication . Lagarto, Beatriz Moura; Ramos, António L. FontesNowadays, the European Union (EU) is facing a completely new security environment that is challenging its capacity to react. In the past, the EU has been shamed several times by the lack of a strong leadership and of strategic vision, which might be changing now. The European project is in a decisive moment, which is reflected in the presentation in June 2016 of “A Global Strategy on the Europeans Union’s Foreign and Security Policy” (EUGS). The EUGS marks the start of a new momentum in the history of European integration with key decisions being finally made. When comparing the last three years with what has been achieved since the 1950s, it is possible to state right away that a lot is indeed being done. However, history shows that integration/cooperation in foreign, security and defence policies has always been marked by great difficulties. It is the aim of this dissertation to study the development of a European Union of Security and Defence, understanding if the courses of action that are being taken will allow for the EU to close the gap between vision and action and finally meet its commitments
- Assessment of oral health care among the institutionalized elderly caregiversPublication . Tavares, Maria; Monteiro, Ana; Dias, Cristiana; Fonseca, Inês; Bornes, Rita; Couto, Patrícia Sofia Soares; Veiga, Nélio JorgeIntroduction: The importance of oral hygiene among the elderly cannot be overlooked, providing physical and psychological well-being, increasing self-esteem and maintaining general health, based on the relationship between oral health and general health. Objectives: The aim of this study consisted of the assessment of the oral health care developed by the caregivers towards their institutionalized elderly in order to understand the necessities of the elderly people and their caregivers. Design and Methods: A cross-sectional study was developed based on a convenience sample that included a final sample of 17 caregivers of institutionalized individuals with 65 years of age or over. It was collected information based on oral hygiene habits, oral health problems, and the role of caregivers in this population and general assessment of oral health status. A questionnaire was developed and applied in the form of an interview directly to the caregivers of the nursing homes Viscondessa São Caetano and Mariana Seixas Foundation in Viseu, Portugal. Results: When asked, caregivers reported that it is rare that the elderly complain of pain or discomfort caused by oral/dental problems. This can also be explained due to the difficulty of communication and the level of dementia that the elderly may present. Regarding dental prostheses, the caregivers considered that the elderly only sometimes or rarely it is that they sanitize them well, which demonstrates the clear need to define better primary prevention strategies for this specific population, passing mainly by oral health education and promotion among the caregivers. They also mentioned that they almost always remove the prosthesis to sleep, which a satisfactory point is considering that the nocturnal rest of the prosthesis consists of a way to avoid the appearance of pathologies such as prosthetic stomatitis. Conclusions: Oral health training is necessary in the elderly and their caregivers, and greater support is also needed when they perform oral hygiene in order to improve their general condition oral health. It is important to highlight the positive fact that the elderly, increasingly, do the nocturnal rest of the dental prosthesis.
- Report on intership in palliative care Southern Adelaide Palliative Services (South Australia) & Unidade de Cuidados Continuados e Paliativos (Hospital da Luz, Lisboa)Publication . Pedroso, Ana Carolina Pimenta; Neto, Isabel GalriçaMy interest in Palliative Care culminated last year in the opportunity of two placements in national and international reference centers. The Unidade de Cuidados Continuados e Paliativos has received me for two months and Southern Adelaide Palliative Services for three. These experiences allowed me to apply on practice the theory learned before and to develop diverse competences, such as: symptomatic control, psychosocial and spiritual approaches, communication with end-of-live patients and their families. During this period, I’ve been immersed in such different health systems, with diverse models of care, that inspired me for me future practice. I’ve had also the opportunity to participate in a research project with CareSearch, which aims to understand the role of the new figure in end-of-life area – death doula – as well as the reasons and context that ended in their appearance. This work made me reflect about the way we care for our patients, opposing to the way they wish to be treated and all the repercussions that this question raises. The statistical analysis is currently being performed and I look forward to contributing to the published article from my work.
