- Portugal nutritional transition during the last 4 decades: 1974–2011Publication . Bento, Alexandra; Gonçalves, Carla; Cordeiro, Tânia; Almeida, Maria Daniel Vaz deObjective: To examine trends in food availability for Portugal during the last 4 decades (1974–2011) and analyze such changes in accordance with the nutritional transition theory. Methods: Food balance sheets from Portugal from 1974 to 2011 were analyzed for potential trends by linear regression to study the availability of protein, fat, carbohydrate, ethanol, and total energy and the availability of the following food groups: (i) cereals and tubers; (ii) vegetables; (iii) fruit; (iv) milk; (v) meat, fish, and eggs; (vi) fat; (vii) pulses; (viii) alcoholic beverages; and (ix) sugar and sweeteners. A comparison regarding protein, fat, and carbohydrate availability and WHO recommendation was also performed. Results: The data suggest that in Portugal food availability and consumption have changed throughout the analyzed period. The national availability of most food groups increased considerably, which also resulted in an increase in daily energy. The consumption of cereals and tubers, pulses, and alcohol diminished during this time. Energy availability increased by 406 kcal/person/day, a result from an increase in protein and fat. Protein availability was in accordance with WHO recommendations during the 4 decades analyzed, whereas carbohydrate have always been below the recommended level and fat has been above the recommended level since the second decade (1984).Conclusion: Portugal has crossed into a nutritional transition over the last 4 decades, revealing characteristics of a pattern of degenerative diseases. The country may experience a new nutritional transition that would involve positive changes of behavior, as observed in other developed countries, driven by community multisectorial strategies.
- Impact of sterilization on phytosterols in canned tuna-based productsPublication . Machado, Manuela; Pimentel, Lígia L.; Rodriguez-Alcalá, Luís M.; Pisco, Ana; Lopes, Margarida; Gomes, Ana M.; Pintado, ManuelaPhytosterols (PS) are characterized by a tetracyclic ring and a side chain linked to carbon 17. They can be classified according to the presence or absence of a double bond at ∆5 position (sterols or stanols respectively). These compounds occur naturally in all foods of plant origin, such as vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, grain products, fruits and vegetables. Normal daily intake from natural sources is 200–400 mg/day. PS enriched foods are considered a valuable option as part of a healthy diet. The beneficial effects of these compounds have been demonstrated by several studies and consequently the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved their use in functional foods. EFSA recommends a continuous daily intake of 3 g of PS during two to three weeks to obtain their claimed effects. In this context, the main objectives of this study were the characterization of the sterols profile of a commercial functional PS-rich ingredient as well as the evaluation of its stability after sterilization (119ºC; 45 min) of a canned tuna-based product enriched in this ingredient. Accordingly, the sterol profile was assayed by GC-FID.

- Comforting interventions applied to the adult/aged individual at the end of life in a hospital context: integrative reviewPublication . Antunes, Juliana Carlos; Pontífice-Sousa, PatríciaBackground: At the end of life, the adult/aged individual experiences suffering and discomfort, resulting, in most cases, in the need to be hospitalized. Thus, the health care requires a multidisciplinary and individualized approach, centred on the promotion of comfort. Purpose: To identify comforting interventions, in the care of adult/aged individuals at the end of life, considering a hospital context. Methods: According Whittemore&Knafl, an integrative review of the literature was performed, using the EBSCOhost and RCAAP databases, within the period comprised between 2012 and 2018. The data analysis was conducted according to Morse & Field and Amado. Results: Among the various ways and means of comforting, we identified 71 comforting interventions, within all the comforting contexts, which were divided in comfort strategies (? 89%) and personal moments of comfort (? 11%), taking into account the suffering and discomfort of the patient and his/her family. Conclusions: Respecting the individual in his/her uniqueness and globality, the provision of comforting care to the hospitalized adult/aged patient at the end of life is achieved through interventions that try to acknowledge the basic and more complex needs, which presupposes flexibility and intentionality when providing care, especially in the field of nursing.
