- Safety evaluation of the food enzyme endo-1,4-β-xylanase from a genetically modified Aspergillus niger (strain XEA)Publication . EFSA Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF); Poças, Maria de Fátima TavaresThe food enzyme is an endo-1,4-β-xylanase (EC 3.2.1.8) produced with a genetically modified strain of Aspergillus niger (strain XEA), by DSM Food Specialities B.V. The food enzyme is intended to be used in baking and brewing processes. Based on maximum use levels recommended for the food processes and individual consumption data from the EFSA Comprehensive European Food Consumption Database, dietary exposure to the food enzyme–total organic solids (TOS) was estimated to be up to 0.310 mg TOS/kg body weight per day in European populations. Genotoxicity tests with the food enzyme did not indicate a genotoxic concern. A repeated dose 90-day oral toxicity study in rodents, carried out with this endo-1,4-β-xylanase, showed no concern with respect to systemic toxicity. The allergenicity was evaluated by searching for similarity of the amino acid sequence to those of known allergens; no match was found. The Panel considers that there are no indications for allergic sensitisation and elicitation reactions by dietary exposure to the food enzyme endo-1,4-β-xylanase. Based on the microbial source, the genetic modifications performed, the manufacturing process, the compositional and biochemical data provided, the dietary exposure assessment, the findings in the toxicological studies and the allergenicity assessment, the Panel concludes that this food enzyme does not give rise to safety concerns under the intended conditions of use.

- Lab2Business: economic valorization of knowledge to the agro-food sectorPublication . Oliveira, Leandro; Cardoso, Eduardo L.; Teixeira, GraçaThe Agrifood Sector is a relevant area of the European and national economy, having undergone considerable evolution in the last years, adapting products to the taste of the consumers while trying to process them in a healthier way and presenting innovative characteristics in order to make them more competitive. Lab2Business is a project that aims to strengthen the transfer of knowledge and technology to the agro-food business sector, thus promoting value creation. The project includes integrated actions from research to innovation: 1. Content production; 2. Promotion at national level; Promotion at international level; 4. Knowledge valorization activities based in a pre-acceleration program of knowledge-based business ideas contributing to the readiness of people and knowledge (business projects) in relation to the market, whether for entrepreneurship opportunities, or for business development. Lab2business project allowed us: to expose R&I capacities trough different means like video interviews with researchers (200 videos) or the portfolio of knowledge (200 entries); to support our participation in national and international networks; and to implement the BIOTECH_agrifood Innovation Program where 30 participants from different Universities developed 12 business projects presented to an ecosystem involving companies, business mentors and investors in early stage projects. An investment in 12 patents took place, looking forward to raise business awareness. Lab2business promoted the knowledge transfer across the agro-food sector and foster the matching between research and innovation.
- Banksy’s ‘Dismaland’ or art as an agent of changePublication . Martins, Adriana Alves de PaulaThis paper will discuss the subversive cultural and political meanings deriving from the construction and dismantlement of Dismaland, a temporary art installation created by Banksy in 2015 that addressed a wide range of evils of globalization from the effects of climate change to the refugee crisis. By considering the exhibition first and foremost as “form of resistance to sanctioned imagery” (Anna Wactawek, 2011: 73), I will examine how through the creation of a utopia in reverse Banksy (i) challenged the construction of the social in visual terms; (ii) questioned modes of reception; and (iii) advocated social consciousness in an epoch of indifference towards the Other.
- Safety assessment of the process ‘BTB PET DIRECT IV* +’, used to recycle post-consumer PET into food contact materialsPublication . EFSA Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF); Poças, Maria de Fátima TavaresThis scientific opinion of the EFSA Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF Panel) deals with the safety evaluation of the recycling process BTB PET direct IV+ (EU register number RECYC0152). The input of the process is hot caustic washed and dried poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) flakes originating from collected post-consumer food contact PET containing no more than 5% of PET from non-food consumer applications. In this technology, washed PET flakes are extruded into pellets which are further crystallised. Crystallised pellets are then preheated and fed to the solid-state polycondensation (SSP) reactor. Having examined the challenge test provided, the Panel concluded that extrusion, crystallisation and SSP are the critical steps that determine the decontamination efficiency of the process. The operating parameters that control their performance are well defined and they are temperature, pressure and residence time. Under these conditions, it was demonstrated that the recycling process is able to ensure that the level of migration of potential unknown contaminants into food is below the conservatively modelled migration of 0.1 μg/kg food. Therefore, the Panel concluded that the recycled PET obtained from this process, intended to be used up to 100% for the manufacture of materials and articles for contact with all types of foodstuffs for long-term storage at room temperature, with or without hotfill, is not considered of safety concern. Trays made of this recycled PET are not intended to be used, and should not be used, in microwave and conventional ovens.
- Scientific opinion on flavouring group evaluation 77, revision 3 (FGE.77Rev3): consideration of pyridine, pyrrole and quinoline derivatives evaluated by JECFA (63rd meeting) structurally related to pyridine, pyrrole, indole and quinoline derivatives evaluated by EFSA in FGE.24Rev2Publication . EFSA Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF); Poças, Maria de Fátima TavaresThe Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids of the EFSA was requested to consider evaluations of flavouring substances assessed since 2000 by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) and to decide whether further evaluation is necessary, as laid down in Commission Regulation (EC) No 1565/2000. The present consideration concerns a group of 22 pyridine, pyrrole and quinoline derivatives evaluated by JECFA (63rd meeting). The revision of this consideration is made since additional genotoxicity data have become available for 6-methylquinoline [FL-no: 14.042]. The genotoxicity data available rule out the concern with respect to genotoxicity and accordingly the substance is evaluated through the Procedure. For all 22 substances [FL-no: 13.134, 14.001, 14.004, 14.007, 14.030, 14.038, 14.039, 14.041, 14.042, 14.045, 14.046, 14.047, 14.058, 14.059, 14.060, 14.061, 14.065, 14.066, 14.068, 14.071, 14.072 and 14.164] considered in this Flavouring Group Evaluation (FGE), the Panel agrees with the JECFA conclusion, ‘No safety concern at estimated levels of intake as flavouring substances’ based on the Maximised Survey-derived Daily Intake (MSDI) approach. Besides the safety assessment of these flavouring substances, the specifications for the materials of commerce have also been evaluated, and the information is considered adequate for all the substances. For the following substances [FL-no: 13.134, 14.001, 14.030, 14.041, 14.042, 14.058, 14.072], the Industry has submitted use levels for normal and maximum use. For the remaining 15 substances, use levels are needed to calculate the modified Theoretical Added Maximum Daily Intakes (mTAMDIs) in order to identify those flavouring substances that need more refined exposure assessment and to finalise the evaluation.
