- The elder hospitalized: limiting factors of comfortPublication . Sousa, Patrícia; Marques, RitaBackground: Hospitalization causes significant changes in the lives of the eldery, due to factors such as the environment, changes in routines, loss of functional capacity, among others. Therefore, it is crucial to identify the contextual factors that emerge as discomforting. Objectives: To identify the limiting factors for comfort on hospitalized elderly. Methods: It is a descriptive study using qualitative methods of data gathering, guided by the ethnographic method. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 elderly patients, audio-recorded and submitted for content analysis [1]. The patients were selected from admissions to the medical services of a Central Hospital, in Lisbon. There was participant observation in order to understand the situational experiences, based on previously structured scripts [2]. Results: Regarding the action context, the factors that emerged, that cause discomfort included environmental conditions (light, noise, equipment, colour, temperature, natural or artificial elements of the environment); quality of food; the absence of activities as well as the lack of human resources and time to care. Conclusions: Comfort nursing care is challenged by the unpredictability of circumstances surrounding the satisfaction of multiple health needs and resources for caring. The action context, related to all its elements, can be limitative of the humanization and completeness in geriatric comfort care, which has a negative impact on the comforting experience of the elderly in hospital.

- Quality assessment of urinary stone analysis: results of a multicenter study of laboratories in EuropePublication . Siener, Roswitha; Buchholz, Noor; Daudon, Michel; Hess, Bernhard; Knoll, Thomas; Osther, Palle J.; Reis-Santos, José; Sarica, Kemal; Traxer, Olivier; Trinchieri, AlbertoAfter stone removal, accurate analysis of urinary stone composition is the most crucial laboratory diagnostic procedure for the treatment and recurrence prevention in the stone-forming patient. The most common techniques for routine analysis of stones are infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and chemical analysis. The aim of the present study was to assess the quality of urinary stone analysis of laboratories in Europe. Nine laboratories from eight European countries participated in six quality control surveys for urinary calculi analyses of the Reference Institute for Bioanalytics, Bonn, Germany, between 2010 and 2014.Each participant received the same blinded test samples for stone analysis. A total of 24 samples, comprising pure substances and mixtures of two or three components, were analysed. The evaluation of the quality of the laboratory in the present study was based on the attainment of 75% of the maximum total points, i.e. 99 points. The methods of stone analysis used were infrared spectroscopy (n = 7), chemical analysis (n = 1) and X-ray diffraction (n = 1). In the present study only 56% of the laboratories, four using infrared spectroscopy and one using X-ray diffraction, fulfilled the quality requirements. According to the current standard, chemical analysis is considered to be insufficient for stone analysis, whereas infrared spectroscopy or X-ray diffraction is mandatory. However, the poor results of infrared spectroscopy highlight the importance of equipment, reference spectra and qualification of the staff for an accurate analysis of stone composition. Regular quality control is essential in carrying out routine stone analysis.

- Edible films as oral delivery systems for xanthines extracted from medicinal plants: an experimental design approachPublication . Castro, Pedro M.; Oliveira, Ana; Fonte, Pedro; Madureira, Ana Raquel; Sarmento, Bruno; Pintado, ManuelaTwo formulations of edible films intended for oral delivery of therapeutic xanthines were developed, following an experimental design approach. Gelatin type A and sodium carboxymethylcellulose were used as polymeric matrices with different physico-chemical nature. Caffeine, a well-known methylxhanthine, was used as model bioactive molecule, representing overall xanthines (e.g. caffeine, theophylline, theobromine) extracted from medicinal plants. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis was performed to outwit the formation of covalent bonds between caffeine and the matrix of edible films. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed to assess if caffeine was homogeneously dispersed on the matrix of edible films. Simulation of gastrointestinal tract and ex vivo permeability studies across intestinal mucosa were performed to predict the delivery profile of caffeine from developed formulations of edible films. Gelatin type A-based edible films offered a slow release of caffeine whereas sodium carboxymethylcellulose-based edible films promote an immediate release of caffeine.
