- Mergers and acquisitions : the case of Cimpor and InterCementPublication . Andrade, Miguel Luís Machado de Oliveira; Tsvetkov, PeterIn June of 2012 Camargo Corrêa, the Brazilian Family Group that controlled the Brazilian cement producer InterCement, acquired 61% of the Portuguese cement production leader, Cimpor, with an offer price of 5.5 Euros, allowing Camargo Corrêa to take full control of Cimpor by owning 94% of the company. Cement is an industry characterized by huge production scales and high initial investments, with an enduring trend of consolidation among cement’s biggest international producers, and this deal comes at the tail-end of the 2008 financial crisis, which marked the European macroeconomic environment, particularly the sovereign treasury of the PIGS (Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain). According to the model used in this work, Cimpor’s share price at the time of the acquisition announcement is found to be undervalued, with 14.8% upside potential. Moreover, adding the forecasted synergies to the model implies a fair offer price of 6.14 Euros, which results in a 23% premium over Cimpor’s closing price.

- The strategic use of gamification and its impact in tourismPublication . Lourisela, Nuno Miguel Mesquita; Amaral, Paulo Fernando Vieira de Carvalho Cardoso doThis dissertation aims to understand if consumers are interested to have gamification incorporated in their tourism experiences and if tourism providers obtain a sustained competitive advantage by implementing a gamification strategy. Several examples of gamification applied in the tourism sector are studied in order to understand how selected tourism providers are using gamification to differentiate their offerings and the value proposition being offered to tourists. Afterwards, an online questionnaire is conducted to assess consumer’s attitude towards these examples. In addition, the internal resource that a tourism provider obtain from implementing a gamification strategy is tested through the application of the RBV framework in order to verify if it provides a source of sustained competitive advantage. The results show that consumers are interested to have gamification in their tourism experiences and tourism providers develop a sustained competitive advantage by implementing a gamification strategy. Therefore, it is recommended that tourism providers leverage gamification by taking the essence of what makes games so appealing and applying it to create superior and innovative products and services that enhance experiences, increase engagement and improve loyalty.
- How can Health Care Social Networks increase user innovation in Health Care?Publication . Lochny, Jonas; Oliveira, Pedro; Canhão, HelenaThe health care industry has experienced a significant advancement in the usage of modern Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) that has allowed the different health care stakeholders an increasing access to health information and enables them to take health care decisions on their own behalf. In this thesis we evaluate this increasing usage of modern communication means and networking opportunities in health care online communities and which effects it can have on user innovation. The overall aim of this thesis is to present and analyze characteristics and determinants to the interested reader of Health Care Social Networks (HCSN) and their online communities and how they can be leveraged for user innovation purposes. In order to do so we analyze previous research conducted on user innovation and online communities and apply relevant findings and methodologies to user innovation behavior in health care. This includes an analysis and differentiation of user entrepreneurs from classic entrepreneurs, their drivers to innovate as well as process of innovation. We will find that HCSN especially support the user entrepreneur process with forms of online collaboration, feedback and reinforcement that can lead to higher individual or collective innovation outcomes. Additionally, we determine strategies HCSN currently apply or should follow in the future in order to further increase the attractiveness of the platform and the respective innovativeness of its users. In a last step of the analysis this thesis evaluates if and how intellectual property protection in health care communities should be practiced and presents the private-collective model developed by von Hippel and von Krogh. The main findings of this thesis help to understand the relevance of Information and Communication Technologies in health care, which implications social networking and online collaboration on Health Care Social Networks have on user innovation and how they can be leveraged.
