- Prevalence and determinants of insomnia symptoms among schoolteachersPublication . Pereira, Carlos; Almeida, Cristina; Veiga, Nélio; Amaral, OdeteIntroduction Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder. In Portugal, teachers have a specific socioeconomic situation, caused by the distance between home and workplace, unstable job situation and students' behavioral problems. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of insomnia in a sample of Portuguese schoolteachers. Participants and methods In a cross-sectional study 604 teachers were assessed of seventeen public schools, from the districts of Aveiro and Viseu, Portugal. Data was collected through a self-administered questionnaire. Insomnia had been defined according to the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) as the presence of one or more of the following symptoms: a) difficulty initiating sleep; b) difficulty maintaining sleep; c) early morning awakening and difficulty getting back to sleep; d) non-restorative sleep, that lasts for a period of 1 month. Results Prevalence of insomnia symptoms in the sample was 40.6%. Prevalence of the variables difficulty initiating sleep, difficulty maintaining sleep, early morning awakening and difficulty getting back to sleep and non-restorative sleep were 14.3%, 28.7%, 19.7% and 20.7%, respectively. Insomnia symptoms had been associated with marital status (divorced; OR = 1.65; 95%CI, 0.78-3.48), years of teaching experience (10 to 20 years; OR = 0.46; 95%CI, 0.28-0.75) and job satisfaction (OR = 0.74; 95%CI, 0.53-1.0). Conclusion Portuguese schoolteachers show a high prevalence of insomnia. Insomnia was associated with sociodemographic and occupational variables.

- Costs and benefits of nursing clinical education for hospital institutionsPublication . Ribeiro, Olivério; Vieira, Margarida; Cunha, MadalenaIntroduction The Nursing Degree Course (NDC) internships realization is assumed as a pertinent study problem for the teaching and hospital institutions, in a way to improve the learning processes and the efficiency of management. Objective To identify the clinical teaching formation costs of nursing students in hospital institutions it was decided to measure through the analysis of a structure indicator the material resources, through a process indicator the human resources on the time spent by nurses provisioning care to patients, and through a results indicator the degree of citizen satisfaction, always having in mind the comparative analysis of hospital costs between the presence and absence of nursing students in Clinical Teachings. Material and method A descriptive-correlational and transversal study was realized on the Hospital, on the year 2011, involving Medicine and Surgery Services, where the Clinical Teachings of the Health School NDC take place. Results The research protocol included a "Documental Corpus" with a list of 26 consumed supplies of the year, an observation grid, for the registration of time of direct cares provided by nurses during 159 observations, and a Citizen Satisfaction Facing Nursing Care Scale, in a sample of 115 citizens inpatient in the services. Conclusion The inferences show that the presence of students in Clinical Teachings in the hospitals leads to a positive balance of 21.57 € per day and service, with a positive reinforcement associated to the resulting citizens satisfaction facing student rendered cares.

- The association between infant development and mother-infant quality of interaction in free play activitiesPublication . Soares, Hélia; Fuertes, Marina; Barbieri, Maria do Céu; Pereira, SandraIntroduction: The mother-infant quality of interaction may influence the infant development in different levels. Objectives: To assess mother-infant quality of interaction, infant development and family resources and their interactions. Methods: Descriptive, correlational study including a random sample of 42 Portuguese healthy infants and their parents. At 11 months, mothers described their infants’ temperament using the Temperament Scale (Lopes dos Santos, Fuertes & Sanches-Ferreira) and identified their family resources with Family Support Scale Family Inventory (Dunst, Jenkins & Trivette); Family Needs Survey (Bailey & Simeonsson) and Parent Responsability Scale (McBride & Mills). Child development was assessed using The Schedule of Growing Skills II (Bellman, Lingam & Aukett). At 12 months, mothers were observed and taped playing with their infants; videos were scored with Care-Index (Crittenden) to assess mothers’s sensitivity. Results: The quality of mother-child interaction was strongly related with infant development outcomes. The infants with better development indicators (e.g., manipulation, vision, speech-language, hearing, language, social interaction and cognition) tended to be more cooperative and had more sensitive mothers. Autonomy was negatively correlated with maternal control and social interaction. Speech-language was negatively associated with maternal passivity. Mothers with higher education levels received more help from fathers and exhibited higher scores on maternal sensitivity. Conclusions: Maternal sensitivity is associated with infant development. In turn, infants with better developmental outcomes were more cooperative, engaged and reciprocal when playing. Infant development and mother-infant quality interaction are mutual affected.
