- Measuring and maximizing the impact of corporate social initiatives : a case study for BSDPublication . Simões, Guillaume André; Pinheiro, Susana Frazão; Neves, FranciscoBeing an applied-research project, the purpose of this dissertation is to enable the Lisbon office of BSD Consulting to gain knowledge of the frameworks allowing firms (BSD’s clients) to measure and monitor the impact of their Corporate Social Initiatives (CSI) in order to help them to define better their features and to maximize their performance. Indeed, since no recognized standards exist for CSI reporting, despite the fact they can produce social and financial benefits, these programs are generally poorly integrated into strategy and evaluated by managers. Ultimately, and this is our main finding, 2 conditions were identified to maximize CSI positive externalities both for business and for society. The first is to adopt a strategic paradigm for these initiatives aligning business and social goals while using firms’ core competencies, and the second is to assess their impact. Hence, we show that impact measurement processes could act as ‘management information systems’ letting managers not only to quantify CSI benefits but mostly to monitor and improve their performance. This point, representing the genesis of the researches undertaken for BSD, constitutes an important focus in this paper and we analyse how firms can set-up CSI impact measurement programs. In addition of presenting different theoretical perspectives, we give throughout the essay examples of contextual relevance, mainly of best practices done by Portuguese companies. Finally, we present the case of the bank Crédito Agrícola, a BSD’s client with whom collaboration is undertaken to determine better the focus of their CSI in order to quantify and maximize their impact.
- Analysing the spectrum of social replication : getting off the beaten trackPublication . Daniel, Laura Marthe Eliane; Pinheiro, Susana FrazãoIt has been demonstrated in the literature that social replication, defined as “replicating a successful social purpose organisation or project in a new geographical location” (Berelowitz et al. 2013, p. 5), can bring both private and social benefits. However, this process is still widely misunderstood or unknown by social ventures. The lack of consensus on the main concepts of this field of research may have been nourishing this issue. This dissertation, which adopts a structure mixing academic dissertation and case study, aims at better defining, analysing, and continuing to explore the present spectrum of social replication in order to assist social ventures in finding a suitable replication path according to their characteristics and social objectives. Based on both the social and the business literatures, potential new replication strategies are sought and defined. Their pros and cons are discussed, as those of the already known paths. The replication paths of two organisations, characterised by their social purpose, are also analysed through case studies. This analysis indicates that there is no right replication path, therefore confirms the Wei-Skillern and Anderson’s (2003) theory. Rather, some social ventures are able to develop tailor-made paths that fall outside the present spectrum of social replication as well as to change them over time in order to improve private and social benefits. Two particular strategies, called “smart collaborative networking” and “social combination”, corresponding to the social replication definition, broaden the present spectrum.

- Transparency in addressing decoupling : the role of corporate transparency in the reformation process of the Institute for the Works of ReligionPublication . Ataíde, Mendo Saraiva de Reffoios Paes de; Ramus, TommasoTransparency in business and especially in the financial industry has proven to be a crucial matter for its stability and success over time. This dissertation is a case study that focuses, through an ethical perspective, in the particular situation of the Holy See’s IOR – Istituto per le Opere di Religione - in its reformation procedures, which are commonly called altogether as a transparency process. It presents the problems IOR underwent and the recent process of change in the organization. It is analyzed the role that corporate transparency has in the solution of ethical problems of the institute, in particular in what regards the effective implementation of corporate values. In the end, it is argued that corporate transparency is an important factor for the implementation of values in the IOR, for through transparency there is the possibility of scrutiny of the company on the part of stakeholders, which harmonizes all reform measures in the same direction and convinces stakeholders of the institutional changes. However, it is also concluded that transparency is not the only factor to guarantee an ethical conduct, for there is the need of control mechanisms to monitor operations. These conclusions go in line with the existing theory on value implementation in organizations, which states that not only values-based programs but also compliance-based programs are effective in solving ethical problems. There is a revision on the existing literature regarding the role of values, Catholic Social Teachings, transparency and the phenomena of decoupling from institutional values in a business.
