- The social impact of crowdfunding : PPL and BES crowdfunding : a social impact measurement study for “crowdfunded” projectsPublication . Rodrigues, João Filipe Escalda; Pinheiro, Susana FrazãoIn the last two years we are witnessing a rapid change in how startups and philanthropic projects are fundraising their activities. Institutional donations and individual supporters are becoming scarce and this fact is particularly relevant to projects that need external funds like non-governmental organizations (NGOs) or social enterprises; hence crowdfunding platforms are becoming widely known as a response to those concerns. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how crowdfunding is emerging in Portugal by looking at PPL, the main crowdfunding website in Portugal and BES Crowdfunding, a social platform resulting from a partnership between PPL and BES (Banco Espírito Santo), a national bank. With a case study format, this thesis also aims to analyze how social projects are facing social impact measurement, by presenting the main methodologies and a practical example of how to apply the Expected Return model. Secondary topics such as motivations for the surging of crowdfunding, future trends, the importance of social impact measurement and its interconnection with crowdfunding are also analyzed. We can conclude that crowdfunding is changing the fundraising paradigm in Portugal and social entrepreneurs are increasingly benefiting from it. Also, social impact measurement has become essential for both philanthropists and organizations, who need to convince external investors and achieve a higher internal efficiency.
- Católica MOVE in Sao Tome and Principe : insightful strategic challenges : exploratory research concerning the organization’s presence and performance in Sao Tome, its mission and activities alignment, and the strategic perspective from the programme’s evolutionPublication . Fernandes, Ana Irene Murcho; Pinheiro, Susana FrazãoThe present dissertation research invites thinking about foreign aid effectiveness, entrepreneurship and social sector’s action in developing countries, all addressing sustainable development. It focuses on the nongovernmental organizations’ potential as intermediary agents for change, as well as on the increasing pressure towards their partial or total autonomy while becoming more financially viable and achieving higher social impact. The literature review addresses foreign aid issues, entrepreneurship as a worthwhile solution to build on developing countries’ sustainability, the evolution of the role of NGOs in the social sector and the promising future of social entrepreneurship. The Católica MOVE in Sao Tome and Principe case study aims to allow an insightful perspective of an NGO in a small African developing country over almost three years and six fellow teams, by presenting its different dynamics and activities. The teaching notes suggest approaching the case study by analyzing and discussing its programme’s strategic evolution in light of the country’s context. Brainstorming around to target a higher financial viability and social impact are suggested. The case study analysis suggests the organization’s increasing visibility and credibility have been emphasizing its positioning in the field through mission and activities’ alignment and coherency.

- Projecto ReMix : a creative way of doing businessPublication . Cardoso, Joana Rita Rodrigues; Pinheiro, Susana FrazãoThe main goal of this dissertation is to explore how social projects can leverage its potential, through some expansion strategies and be able to sustain itself in the long-term. This is the case of Projecto ReMix, an initiative born in Chelas - a problematic neighborhood in Portugal. This a project currently referenced at national and international level, with more than 25 points of sale across the country and orders from abroad. It has been receiving a lot of exposure thanks to its social intervention, namely in what considers the eco-design and eco-services activities. The increasing awareness of social enterprises’ potential to the economy and society is opening new opportunities and challenges to consolidate how governments and private institutions can support these initiatives, making them more efficient and dynamic. ReMix structure is, nowadays, represented in four distinct yet complementary levels: the Eco-Design, the Eco-Services, Eco-Brigades and Eco-Theatre activities. Within this dissertation, it is possible to re-live and follow all the challenges that 3rd sector organizations face, namely in funding itself, defining strategies and business model creation in a triple bottom line principle. In a transition phase, ReMix must now decide what path to pursue, every step, every hour, every member, every opinion counts. What shall be next steps ReMix must pursue in order to drive its mission and to achieve a long-term sustainability?.
