- (Re)designing business models based on circular principles : a comparative case study of three fashion companiesPublication . Zombori, Julia Anna; Leglise, LaureThe fashion industry is one of the most polluting sectors worldwide and currently operates under linear economy principles leading to prominent levels of overconsumption. While it is growing rapidly, increasing attention has been drawn to the industry's significant negative environmental and social impacts. Making a transition towards circular systems and incorporating circular economy principles into business models can be one solution for the future of the fashion industry. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine how do fashion companies implement circular practices in their business models. To answer the research question, I used the business model canvas as the theoretical framework and adopted a qualitative approach. I conducted a comparative case study of three fashion companiesthat have started the transition towards a circular economy. My findings indicated that primarily four components of the business model canvas are affected in the process of transitioning towards circular systems specifically value proposition, key partner, key activities, and key resources. However, they demonstrated that it requires a systematic transformation across the entire value chain. Finally, my findings suggested that it is a complex process, and there are different strategies that can be utilized to implement circular principles, namely incorporating sustainable material choices, exploring new business models, and applying other operational best practices.
