- How does individual autonomy within a business unit influence its ability to handle dispersed knowledge?Publication . Rye, Vemund Vole; Fernandes, DanielThis thesis explores how individual autonomy within a business unit affects the efficiency of decision-making in handling dispersed knowledge. Drawing on Friedrich Hayek’s concept of dispersed knowledge, it aims to investigate whether employees are better equipped to handle such knowledge in a more autonomous position, due to their localized, tacit understanding of their specific functions. Through qualitative interviews with project managers and employees from two IT departments - one in Norway and one in Portugal - the research examines how autonomy affects their ability to handle information, in a sector characterized by a high degree of specialization, innovation and tacit knowledge. The findings suggest that a high autonomy level can enable employees to effectively utilize localized knowledge, adapt to local circumstances effectively, and reduce bureaucratic obstacles. However, excessive autonomy might also lead to tunnel vision among employees, and lack of coordination and standardization. The study suggests that autonomy can enhance efficiency in departments dealing with high amount of dispersed knowledge, if combined with a strategic oversight and a sufficient level of competence.
