- Digitizing collections: a reflection on negative archive collections, prioritizing procedures and what is lostPublication . Pereira, Catarina Cortes; Castro, Laura; Barata, Carolina; San Andrés, MargaritaA common practice today, for photograph collections, is to create images databases available (or not) on-line. Usually, this is regarded as an added value to the collection, especially for making it available outside its community. This paper focuses on the values that define and prioritize the digitizing process of negative photograph archive collections. A reflection is made on the effects of mass digitization, how are the negatives being represented in their digitized versions and what does this mean for future generations. In this digital age, when the knowledge about historical photographic processes has become the knowledge of experts, the need for complete and comprehensive records is paramount to ensure the passing on of knowledge and, consequently, the preservation of the negative collections

Pereira, Catarina Cortes; Castro, LauraThis paper aims to present a study of old photographic retouching manuals which is part of a research pro ject on the retouching of gelatin silver glass plate negatives from Portuguese photographic col lec tions from the first half of the twentieth century. Several contemporary authors of var ious nationalities were studied. - Retouching the third dimension: the Aurélio da Paz dos Reis stereoscopic negatives archivePublication . Pereira, Catarina Cortes; Castro, Laura; Barata, Carolina; San Andrés, MargaritaThe paper explores photography retouching, particularly its use in dry plate stereoscopic negatives. The materials and techniques used and their relationship with the retouching practice in non-stereoscopic photography are discussed. This research focuses on the Portuguese photographer Aurélio da Paz dos Reis's collection of negatives, and how he used retouching for the composition of his stereoscopic portraits. These are studio-like portraits, and today they are a reminder of the artistic society, with whom the photographer had a close relationship and other celebrities. Better known for event and general outdoor photography, this paper presents a contribution to the characterization of a less studied type of photography by this author. Also, these portraits witness the photographic techniques of their time and how the photographic portrait and retouching always had a special place in the history of photography.
