- From a mess to success : a human resource management study aiming to create a best-practices guideline for Portuguese managers moving into AngolaPublication . Pereira, António Manuel Brotas de Carvalho Gonçalves; Pinho, André de AlmeidaDoing business in emerging countries, such as Angola, can represent very profitable ventures. However, besides the lack of infrastructure and market transparency, the largest obstacle is the language-barrier. With the vast majority of Angolans speaking solely Portuguese and/or their dialects, multinational companies that hold a presence in both Portugal and Angola are known to desire having Portuguese managers move to Angola. Attracted by the financial improvements of their contracts and interesting projects, managers who accept the challenge of moving to Angola, typically face a cultural shock when arriving to this country. This is due to culture differences, opposite economic realities, distance from home, amongst others… With this dissertation, the reader will receive practical knowledge on the best practices of management in Angola. This knowledge was shared by experienced expatriates in Angola who have seen and experienced the efficient and inefficient of doing business in the country and dealt with the day-to-day challenges that it presents. The thesis is relevant to any manager that is responsible for a team as it gives concrete advice on working with leaders, subordinates, clients and other stakeholders. Nonetheless, it is specifically directed towards Human Resources Managers, as it points out the need to differentiate tactics when dealing with local versus expatriated employees, advices on recruitment, and improvement of other KPI´s, such as employee happiness.
