Mendes, Tania; Areosa, JoãoThe analysis of work accidents creates strategies to prevent this kind of event once it allows the improvement of professionals' working conditions and therefore improves the patient's health cares. The purpose of this study performed in a Lisbon hospital is to describe and analyze the work accidents with health professionals. The research was made from the information given by the epidemiological questionnaires of work accidents applied in the occupational health of the studied hospital. These data were edited into SPSS and used descriptive statistics in the analysis. It was found that nurses are the health professional class who has more work accidents, in particular those who have that job for over 10 years. Work accidents with health professionals most often occur in inpatient services during the morning shift, particularly in the period between 8 am and 12 noon. Trauma injuries are the most frequent type of accident, followed by needle sticks. Within the trauma, low back pain is the most usual type of injury, especially among operating assistants and nurses.
