- Evaluating the long-term social impact and financial sustainability of diverse buy-one-give-one models in hybrid organisations : an explanatory researchPublication . Klammt, Willi; Azevedo, CarlosThis thesis examines the long-term social impact and financial sustainability of Buy-OneGive-One (BOGO) models in hybrid organisations. Popularised by TOMS Shoes, the BOGO model promises that for every product sold, a corresponding item is donated. While the approach inspired other social enterprises, doubts remain about its ability to achieve both financial stability and sustainable social impact. This thesis investigates how BOGO business models balance these objectives and identifies key factors influencing their success or failure. Using a qualitative research design, the study combines secondary data analysis and semistructured interviews with stakeholders from firms using BOGO business models. The analysis examines internal factors such as financial dependency, mission drift, and strategic adaptability, as well as external factors like market developments. Findings reveal that financial dependency on consumer-driven revenue streams and thin profit margins make firms adopting BOGO business models vulnerable to market fluctuations. Socially, the focus on one-time donations often failsto address systemic challenges or achieve long lasting impact, compounded by the lack of robust impact measurement frameworks. A key insight is the importance of adaptability. To remain relevant, firms adopting BOGO business models must go beyond simple donation models by adopting diversified revenue strategies and fostering greater operational flexibility. This thesis contributes to hybrid business model theory by offering insights on how firms can balance profit with purpose, providing guidance for practitioners, policymakers, and social enterprises aiming to develop hybrid models that are both financially viable and socially impactful.
