Bidarra, Carlos Alexandre dos Santos; Cardeal, NunoWhen operating in moderately dynamic mature industries, companies tend to resist the idea of change. If the current business model is producing acceptable results, why engage in a change process? The answer comes with time, as sooner or later, changes in the environment will slowly emerge. Investigating this phenomenon requires analysing two critical perspectives: the internal and external context of the companies. Therefore, the Resource-Based View and Dynamic Capabilities help understand both contexts, respectively. Scholars go further and argue that Dynamic Capabilities are a particular case of the Resource-Based View. The presented dissertation aims to answer which resources/capabilities are at the root of a company's competitive advantage and how they were developed over time.Through a case study approach, this dissertation explores how VINILOURENÇO, a familyowned SME operating in the wine industry, orchestrated its resources and developed new capabilities at the root of its competitive advantage over time. The empirical findings obtained contribute to the existing literature by demonstrating how critical resources/capabilities are converted into competitive advantage, positioning the sources of competitive advantage on the side of capabilities rather than resources.
