Augusto, Nuno Afonso da Silva Marques; Modesto, Maria Leonor Martins RibeiroThis paper attempts to quantify the impact of cultural variables in the decision to have children. The main data is from the American General Social Survey. The two most important variables used are the observed women’s siblings, viewed as the personal experience variable, and the fertility rate of their ancestral country in 1960. Both variables are positive and significant which implies that these are in fact important factors to take into consideration.
