- How the European Union renewable energy directive impacts the global energy industry : evidence from global stock marketsPublication . Alves, Ana; Venter, ZoëThis thesis investigates the impact of the European Union's Renewable Energy Directive (RED) on global energy markets, assessing investor response and its implications for the energy industry. The study analyses cumulative abnormal returns of 409 firms, including fossil fuel and renewable energy sectors across Europe, North America, and Asia. An event study methodology is employed to capture market reactions from the proposal to the approval of RED. The findings suggest that the implementation of RED has resulted in significant positive cumulative abnormal returns. This highlights that investors take regulatory changes into account when evaluating climate risks. It is worth noting that, contrary to expectations, the fossil fuel industry experienced a paradoxical positive response after the implementation of RED. This implies that the market recognizes the need for transitioning towards more environmentally friendly practices. The thesis explores the regional impacts of RED, revealing that its effects extend beyond the EU and influence energy firms globally. This research contributes to the discourse on climate risk premiums and the financial implications of green regulation, offering fresh insights into how environmental policies are shaping investment decisions in the energy industry.

- Monoterpene hydroxy lactones isolated from Thalassiosira sp. microalga and their antibacterial and antioxidant activitiesPublication . Morais, Alcina M. M. B.; Kumla, Decha; Martins, Valter F. R.; Alves, Ana; Gales, Luis; Silva, Artur M. S.; Costa, Paulo M.; Mistry, Sharad; Kijjoa, Anake; Morais, Rui M. S. C.Two monoterpenoid lactones, loliolide (1) and epi-loliolide (2), were isolated from the crude dichloromethane extract of a microalga, Thalassiosira sp.). The structures of loliolide (1) and epi-loliolide (2) were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR analysis, as well as a comparison of their 1H or/and 13C NMR data with those reported in the literature. In the case of loliolide (1), the absolute configurations of its stereogenic carbons were confirmed by X-ray analysis, whereas those of epi-loliolide (2) were determined by NOESY correlations. Loliolide (1) and epi-loliolide (2) were tested for their growth inhibitory activity against two Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212) and two Gram-negative (Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853) bacteria, as well as one clinical isolate (E. coli SA/2, an extended-spectrum β-lactamase producer-ESBL) and two environmental isolates, S. aureus 74/24, a methicillin-resistant (MRSA), and E. faecalis B3/101, a vancomycin-resistant (VRE) isolates. The results showed that none of the tested compounds exhibited antibacterial activity at the highest concentrations tested (325 μM), and both revealed low antioxidant activity, with ORAC values of 2.786 ± 0.070 and 2.520 ± 0.319 µmol TE/100 mg for loliolide (1) and epi-loliolide (2), respectively.

- Nutritional therapy in critically IIIPublication . Alves, Ana; Rabiais, Isabel Cristina Mascarenhas; Madureira, Manuela; Freitas, Carlos; Sousa, AlexandraIntroduction: Nutritional therapy has had a major impact on the evolution of the clinical situation on the critical patient as well as the choice of treatment. The oral/enteral feeding is more physiologic and preferable, therefore, whenever possible, should be used the gastrointestinal tract. When this cannot be used, the parenteral is indicated, either supplement or total. Objective: The aim of this study is to clarify the importance of the nutritional therapy in critically ill patients. Material and Methods: A systematic review of the literature by mobilizing the descriptors “Nutritional Therapy”, “Critical Patients” and “Nursing care”, use the method peak. Were selected ten databases imaginable, between 2012-2016, included for analysis nine articles. Results and Discussion: It was found in most of the studies that malnutrition in hospital environment is highly prevalent and is not always recognized by health professionals. Nutritional support is intended to provide an intake of sufficient energy to feed the patient needs, in order to prevent malnutrition or correct a situation of pre-existing malnutrition. A nutritional approach is, among others, by the institution of enteral nutrition and parenteral nutrition, whose impact on improving the nutritional status of the client is very important in reducing morbidity and mortality. These aspects imply optimizing the balance of protein in reviews of Intensive Care Unit (ICU), as well as an improvement of the energy balance. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the treatment of the patient in a critical situation must include nutritional therapy, with the aim of reducing associated complications. After stratified the risks, its necessary to choose the adequate nutritional therapy. This, in a critical patient, can result in a better evolution of the underlying disease with increased survival, improving the quality of life and reduction the time that a patient stays in the hospital.
