Abstract(s)
This chapter addresses the legislation and the principles for safety evaluation of packaging and other food contact materials in Europe and how these have been applied to nanomaterials. The materials already authorized or evaluated in Europe are presented. From the regulatory point of view, the precise definition of «Nanomaterial» is important and therefore it is also briefly discussed. Developments in mathematical models to estimate migration of nanoparticles as a tool in their safety assessment are also addressed.
