Influenciados pelos epigramas gregos e latinos, e especialmente pelos do epigramista latino Marcial, os escritores portugueses do século XVIII compuseram um grande número de composições dessa natureza, atacando, entre outros, classes profissionais (médicos, oficiais de justiça, barbeiros), mulheres, bêbedos e inimigos em geral.
Influenced by Greek and Latin epigrams, and specially by those of the Latin epigramist Martial, eighteenth-century Portuguese authors wrote a great number of such compositions, attacking, among others, professional groups, (such as doctors, justice officers, barbers), women, drunkards and all kinds of enemies.
