The main intention of our study was to focus on the classic and philosophical elements in the first two novels of Camilo Castelo Branco: Anathema and Mysteries of Lisbon. In the first place we try to reveal some classical elements in the diegetic construction of the Camillian novel and specify the type of classicism that characterizes it. Next, we
highlight the poetic characters that integrate the construction of the novel, specify those that best approximate the canon of Aristotelian ‘poetics’ and draws conclusions of the metaphysical expression of their novels. Finally, we explore some philosophical elements in certain texts of Camilo’s literary criticism thus corroborating the elements attested in
the Novel.
