- Scaffold based on castor oil as an osteoconductive matrix in bone repair: biocompatibility analysisPublication . Lima, Fabianne Soares; Matos, Luis Felipe; Pacheco, Isnayra Kerolaynne; Reis, Fernando; Câmara, João Victor Frazão; Pierote, Josué Junior Araujo; Matos, José Milton; Ribeiro, Alessandra; Moura, Walter; Fialho, Ana CristinaTo analyze the biocompatibility of the scaffold produced from a natural polymer derived from castor oil through hemolytic activity and antimicrobial activity, to enable the clinical application. Three in vitro tests were performed: Hemolytic activity test - Polymer partially dissolved in contact with blood agar; Hemolytic activity test in sheep's blood - Polymer extract with red blood cells solution; Antimicrobial activity test - Solid polymer in direct contact with E. Coli and S. Aureus. For hemolytic tests, none of the samples showed hemolysis. Negative hemolytic activity is a good indicator, as the maintenance of the blood clot in the area of the lesion is essential for the formation of new tissue. For the antimicrobial activity test, no significant activity was observed against the bacteria used. The polymer is not toxic to red blood cells, being viable for clinical application as a matrix for tissue regeneration.

- 3D-printed jewelry : a new era for online jewelry customization : exploring consumer perceptions, consumption drivers and barriers for the portuguese online marketPublication . Soares, Alfredo Duarte Lóia de Almeida Silva; Rita, Miguel Fontes Casegas CorreiaThe jewelry industry has been forever re-shaped by the introduction of 3D printing technology. When compared to the centuries-old production methods still in use, 3D printing allows the creation of previously "impossible" designs, fully customized and at a fraction of the cost and time. Driven by the international growth of this business and the increasing trend for online purchases among Portuguese consumers, this research aims to determine their perceptions of this disruptive product, as well as the drivers and barriers for its adoption/purchase. Following a thorough review of the literature, this study has adopted the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and expanded it to incorporate additional variables relevant to the research subject. For this study, 10 in-depth interviews were conducted, followed by an online questionnaire that generated 115 valid responses. From the data analysis, it was possible to conclude that despite the low levels of awareness and purchase of 3D-printed jewelry in the Portuguese market, a significant percentage of consumers demonstrated strong indicators toward the adoption and acquisition of this product. Moreover, the perceived ease of use, usefulness, compatibility, customization level, along with the aesthetic features of the jewelry, the tech optimism of the consumer and his/her attitude toward the use of the product, were identified as the key purchase drivers, influencing the behavioral usage intention of 3D-printed jewelry. In contrast, the perceived cost, the lack of awareness along with the problems and concerns associated to the online jewelry shopping were identified as the main barriers for consumers’ purchase.
- Gaming as a subscription : analysis of portuguese gaming consumers perspectives on access-based gaming subscriptionsPublication . Rafael, Alexandre Miguel McCall; Rita, Miguel Fontes Casegas CorreiaGaming subscriptions have grown immensely since the gaming industry became more digital, and access-based subscriptions are no exception. With the entrance and rebranding of companies in the Portuguese gaming subscription market, it is now essential to study the consumers’ perspectives. This dissertation aims to do just that by looking at drivers, barriers, and willingness to pay for these services. First, a literature review was created to discover the initial hypothesis, followed by ten individual interviews to seek if they were confirmed and to discover potential new ones. Subsequently, an online survey was created that gathered 225 valid answers and confirmed some of the hypotheses thought beforehand. Findings showed that the main drivers for the service are the number of games, service quality and usage frequency, while the main barrier are the division of games between subscriptions. Furthermore, the average willingness to pay for these services is 7,80 euros per month, higher than some currently available services and more than the average spent in gaming in Europe. Differences in opinions were also found between who has the subscription and who does not. To conclude, strategies were created and thought to improve the adoption of access-based gaming subscriptions and the competitiveness of players in the market.
- Success factors of cloud-gaming servicesPublication . Zimmermann, Phillip; Rita, Miguel Fontes Casegas CorreiaIn 2010 OnLive launched the world’s first commercial cloud-gaming-service. Ever since, cloud-gaming is considered as the “future” of gaming by many players in the multi-billiondollar industry of gaming. This study aims to research possible success factors of the innovative business model and reveal the research questions, namely which drivers increase or hinder the utilization of cloud-gaming. By conducting qualitative (10 interviews) and quantitative research (203 viable answers) among a broad sample across German gaming communities’ meaningful insights were exposed. It was found that the service, at current state, is, due to underlying technology, not suitable for all gaming genres, mainly because of its dependency on latency. Service that goes beyond consumers’ expectations eventually causes great interest in the service, especially in form of access to ‘AAA’-titles. With cloud-gaming-services, commonly in form of a digital product, consumers are concerned with not physically owning a device. Nonetheless, CEOs of the largest enterprises in different industries are optimistic that cloud-gaming will, with progress in technology, soon be more appreciated within the communities and become the future of gaming.
- On-demand grocery delivery in Germany : an empirical analysis of determinants affecting customers' purchase intentionsPublication . Groß, Maria Katharina; Rita, Miguel Fontes Casegas CorreiaOn-demand grocery delivery services (ODGDS) are proposed as a new way of last-mile experience and a step towards the next level of (e-)commerce. Even though the topic has gained a great interest among researchers and practitioners, empirical research on consumer behavior in quick commerce is scarce. Thus, the purpose of this study conducted is to enrich existing findings on purchase behavior by providing an overview of drivers and barriers to adopting to ultra-fast grocery delivery of German consumers. A twofold analysis is performed; qualitative data were collected through semi-structured expert interviews and quantitative data was gathered through an online survey with 186 participants. Evidently, the intention of consumers to use ODGDS is mainly driven by convenience and peer group behavior, followed by general perception, good assortment, and curiosity. Meanwhile, the main barriers are found among on-site factors, personal value motives, and missing use instances. Demographic characteristics that identify users are gender and place of residence; however, income and age are not determinative factors when it comes to the usage of ODGDS. This research has practical implications as it attempts to use a constructed model to make predictions for imaginary personas and predict their purchase intention based on distinct demographic and personal characteristics. Managerial implications are assured as learnings can serve as guidance for ultra-fast delivery start-ups to develop targeted customer acquisition strategies.
