- The impact of AI on new product development : an empirical study on the state and outcomes of AI adoption in German FinTech startupsPublication . Thobe, Simon; Almeida, Filipa deArtificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly reshaping business processes. As such, new research has gathered first insights on its applicability and impact on the process of New Product Development (NPD). While existing literature emphasizes AI9s ability to accelerate innovation, current studies have predominantly focused on large companies, leaving startups 3 especially from the FinTech sector 3 underexplored. Therefore, this study investigates the impact of different levels of AI maturity on NPD speed in German FinTech startups. It provides further insights on the state of integration by analyzing which phases of the NPD process contain the highest AI usage, how much companies spend on the integration of AI and which challenges they face. Using a quantitative approach, data was collected from 52 startups through an executivetargeted survey. The results suggest that low-maturity AI applications, especially those used for automating tasks, can significantly reduce the time for new product development. However, higher maturity levels 3 supporting decision-making and opportunity identification 3 were not found to have a statistically significant effect. While AI is predominantly used to develop prototypes & MVPs, conduct business analyses and prepare products for launch, FinTech startups remain modest in their investments towards AI integration, mostly relying on thirdparty applications instead of developing own solutions. Furthermore, startups face barriers such as concerns about data reliability, complexity of integration and limited internal expertise, potentially preventing them from a deeper integration. As a result, this study provides valuable insights on the adoption of AI and its impact on business processes in emerging companies.
