- AI-driven growth in climate tech startups : the perspective of startups & venture capitalist in scaling climate solutionsPublication . Schmidt, Celina Lucy; Bohnsack, René; Silva, Margarita Oja DaThis thesis examines how artificial intelligence (AI) is driving growth and investment in climate technology startups. It explores how AI influences the investment criteria of venture capitalists (VCs) and how startups perceive the role of AI in scaling business operations and securing funding. Within the context of current climate challenges and EU frameworks, such as the European Green Deal, AI is proving to be an enabler of efficiency, innovation and scalability. The qualitative study is based on semi-structured interviews with VCs and climate tech startups. The results show that VCs tend to favor startups that authentically integrate AI, while startups highlight the importance of AI for streamlining processes and optimizing resources. However, challenges such as data quality issues, integration complexity and high energy consumption continue to limit the adoption of AI. Despite these limitations, the thesis concludes as AI provides a strategic advantage and a key driver for innovation in climate tech, enabling startups to address the challenges of climate change while navigating a shifting investment environment. The findings help to understand the transformative potential of AI in supporting sustainable growth and advancing climate innovation in this rapidly evolving sector.
