Rocha, Joana Isabel Pereira da; Ribeiro, Ricardo Miguel Martins da CostaThis thesis develops and estimates a demand model for commercial bank loan services to assess the determinants of consumer bank lending choice involving commercial banks. Following the discrete choice literature, consumers typically respond to price and product characteristics. Using data from the U.S. banking industry from 2011 to 2015, the results suggest that consumers respond negatively to an increase in service fees and in loan interest rates. Furthermore, they indicate that consumers prefer younger banks and that asset risk does not influence the decision-making process.
