- The relationship between environmental degradation and economic growth : role of policies and international agreementsPublication . Pacelli, Antonia; Reis, Hugo Jorge Correia de Azambuja de FreitasThis master thesis analyses the relationship between economic growth and environmental degradation considering as pollutant carbon dioxide and its emissions’ effects on eight countries from 1960 to 2016, through the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis. The key feature is to explore the impact of the introduction of environmental policies, the Kyoto Protocol and Asian Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate (APP). The first policy imposes in its statement an emission target, whereas in the APP countries involved have only committed for the reduction of the emissions, privileging renewable resources and clean technology. In this context, it is possible to discuss the effects of those policies and the role of enforceability to achieve the emissions reduction. This study provides an insight on the findings concerning the weaknesses of the standard models (EKC through unit root, cointegration and structural break tests. In this setup, the study discusses the role of each agreement in the relation between emissions and economic growth. The results show that correcting for cointegration the evidence of EKC hypothesis are weaker and that the effects of Kyoto Protocol exist but not as significant as expected, probably due to the still short period of time after its implementation.
