Matos, Ana Marta Lopes; Resende, Ana Maria Vieira SoaresIntroduction: Population aging, associated with an increase in chronic diseases and the occurrence of falls, as well as the seriousness of the associated consequences, can compromise self-care and quality of life, constituting a risk factor for the safety of elderly people. Nurses are responsible for helping to prevent the risk factors associated with falls, promoting health literacy and optimising self-care, ensuring the involvement of the person. This report describes the activities developed during the internship of Master's Degree in Nursing and area of Specialization in Community Nursing: Community and Public Health Nursing, focusing on a community intervention project aimed at elderly people attending a day centre in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. Objective: The aim of the project was to help prevent falls among elderly people attending a Day Centre. Methodology: The project was supported by the Health Planning methodology. An interview was carried out with the key informant at the Day Centre and questionnaires were administered to the elderly in the health situation diagnosis phase. The intervention was based on the theoretical framework of Nola Pender's Health Promotion Model. Results: The data revealed a priority for intervention in terms of compromised knowledge of fall prevention and compromised mobility. The intervention favoured the following selections of strategies: health education, the establishment and involvement of partnerships and periodic meetings and marketing in communication and dissemination of the project. The activities carried out achieved satisfactory results in terms of knowledge about fall prevention. Conclusion: The project highlighted the importance of nurses as facilitators in the prevention of falls, implementing strategies and interventions to help capacitate older people in risk factors and preventive strategies for falls. This project allowed the acquisition and development of skills in the aforementioned area.
